If the engine temperature sensor is faulty the ecu stops using it and assumes the temp is normal operating temperature.

Have a sniff first, if it smells then it is probably what you were smelling.
Over charging is not always what makes them smell.
To test it you really just need to see what voltage it tops out...

Batteries can make that smell too. Might be overchargine perhaps? Take a cap off the battery and have a cautious sniff... don't burn your nose with acid fumes!

I think it would take both speed sensors to be defective for there to be no gears. Even then wouldn't it change if it got to red line?

Yes, and I have seen the symptom with no torn boot, the c.v. clunked when the wheel was turned at hard lock though and jammed up occasionaly.
Potentily very dangerous so it needs fixing as soon...

Some models have it in the kick panel, some have it in the dash, some have both Harvey.
He said he had already looked in the kick panel and it wasn't there.... It would be a good idea to look...

They may be near the steering column. Take the plastic trim off from under the dash, just above your feet, and lay on the floor and look up there. They may be taped up and they may be on the top side...

Putting it in 1st does increase the drive ratio to the rear wheels. It makes it "more aggressive" according to subaru. But, there should be drive there in any gear. As someone else suggested earlier,...

No lights, the fuse makes the noise goes away, it tells me that all the electrical and mechanical systems ar operating as they should be.
Are you sure you do not have a missmatched tyre?...

Yes, put the fuse in when you get to the parking lot if you are worried about it. It's quite safe though.
If the fuse cures your thump then we know it is the AWD thumping and can beguin diagnosing...

This sounds like the clutch that applies the AWD is being kept on all the time, when it should be releasing...
