Pro's & Con's for the underdrive pulley on SVX?
Alright...well the SVX forced my hand and wore out the crank pulley. While I'm in there should I just 'upgrade' to an underdrive pulley? (Why didnt subaru install it originally with one?)
I intend later in life to put some more serious money into the car (dont we all...), and dislike redoing work already done. Is there a situation where changing it out would be unadvicable? turbo? 6spd? upgraded alt? James

Re: Pro's & Con's for the underdrive pulley on SVX?
I would not get an underdrive pulley... Just get a lightened one on NASIOC or ebay. I think I paid $60 or $70 for the one I used to have...

whoa... I posted before searching... Boy is there a long confusing genital size comparing thread on the topic already....Makes me rather want to avoid the whole issue....
Which I also forgot about... lightened vs underdrive....and is there a lightened one with a damper? Is there a better version of the stock one? one that still has a damper in it? IDK whatever!

You can get an aftermarket one with a damper but it is going to run you big $$. Just look for a used Perrin (stock sized) pulley on NASIOC and dont worry about it anymore.

+1 to the above. Stock size, definitely.

The most commonly seen aftermarket damped pulley is the Fluidampr one, but it's something like $300+ and no lighter than stock. Underdrive aren't popular because they spin everything slower, in a car that is already well known to have an overtaxed electrical system. Most go with a stock size, lightweight pulley. I'm running the Group A one myself.

Re: Pro's & Con's for the underdrive pulley on SVX?
I took off the "crankshaft pulley" altogether.
Ditched the alternator as well. No power steering either. Who needs that crap! I just keep a 110 volt charger on it when I'm not blastin my "guns"! AC who needs that, what with global warmin we might as well just get used to it! Saved myself 5.25#s for the crank pulley, 31#s for the AC system 4# for the alt and belts, 2#for the AC/alt bracket! Yep, it revs like a SOB, nw and is real fast! And the walks home after my short drives have helped me to discover NATURE! Like the pack of ferrel/wild dogs in my neighborhood [SIZE="1"]You would'nt think that the little ones had such sharp teeth.[/]SIZE]

How the hell does a crank pulley wear out? I'm serious... could one of you mechanical geniuses explain that to me?... I had mine off... it seemed a sold piece of steel to me....

Re: Pro's & Con's for the underdrive pulley on SVX?
Yeah just go with the OEM model. Even if you go with a light weight setup its something that you will notice while driving anyways.

Re: Pro's & Con's for the underdrive pulley on SVX?
Two pluses to the lightweight ones completely unrelated to performance:
They are one piece, so they can't ever separate. Piece of mind. There are lightweight ones that are cheaper than new OEM ones. Used OEM ones can be found really cheap though.

Lightweight pulleys are fantastic placebo parts. If you "feel a difference in acceleration", it's in your head.
