FWD fuse to disconnect driveshaft
Does putting in the FWD fuse stop the driveshaft from spinning? Or does it just spin with the tires without any power going through it? I've got the fuse in but still have the metal scraping sound up front that my mechanic told me is my driveshaft.

The shaft will still rotate driven via the wheels, as you have suspected. The switch fuse will only prevent drive from the engine and transmission, as a result of preventing the centre clutch from engaging.

Your post speaks of vibrations...
And of a wrong replacement driveshaft. Can you take your original driveshaft to a driveshaft specialist and have him de-stake the U-joints and replace them? U-joints are only $25-$30 or so each, the tough part is finding someone who can reassemble it without causing a vibration. Tom

Shipping should not be that much if I split it into two pieces that you can bolt back together.

They found a "used '94 SVX driveshaft" for $350 local, and I told them to hold off. Enter my "parts wanted" thread. I found another one at a nearby yard for $200, but then they called back and said it wasn't from an SVX after all. So I pulled the trigger on the $350 one only to find out today at 4pm that it was too short. They claimed that the two-piece redesign wouldn't fit my car and I need one from a '92 or '93. I'm not buying it. Turns out I was offered two overpriced Legacy driveshafts in just 24 hours. So I left the garage as they're closing up for the weekend and my car is making a horrible scraping sound from the front end. I freaked out a bit. I called the shop, as they'd closed the gate behind me, and they said that it was just a little worse off than before and to "take it easy on the throttle." I've been searching here since I crippled it home, and yeah it sounds like the heat shield to me. I've also been learning about durability issues with the early one piece driveshafts, so now I'm thinking that upgrading to a later two piece might be the best idea. Tomorrow I'm going to get under there and see if I can get that heat shield back where it was before so I don't have to listen to it, then I'll be tracking down parts to get shipped. I might very well take you up on your offer Tom. Thanks for listening. That was therapeutic.

1)All SVXi had the same length driveshaft. 2)The term "one piece" refers to a two piece driveshaft, that does not unbolt in the middle BUT it still has two sections of driveshaft with a flex joint connecting the two pieces. 3)In all of the worn out SVX driveshafts that I have seen, all of them had either the front U-joint, or the rear U-joint bad and never yet the middle one. Is your bad driveshaft one that can be unbolted in the middle? Is the front, rear, or both U-joints notchy?

My understanding is that if I want to replace it all I should have my choice of any year as long as I get the entire assembly from trans to diff. Hopefully I can get it down to my friend's house in the valley tonight to get underneath it as see stuff for myself. It's pouring outside and my driveway is steep and muddy. ![]()

What're the odds these guys are telling the truth?

I'm also considering: http://driveshaftmasters.com/ or http://www.wencodriveshafts.com/ or for a price http://www.acpt.com/driveshaft/index.html Finding a decent mechanic can be a real problem, but am I making it more difficult than it needs to be when it comes to parts? I mean, this is LA, there's custom performance shops on every corner. I looked at all the discussions on here about aluminum or carbon fiber parts, but didn't see anyone who actually committed to it. Is anybody out there running a non-OEM driveshaft? How's that working out for you? Any way I slice it I'll be spending over $500 on this job, so why not open up my options?

hi there are 2 different drive shafts used in SVX ,one with center u joints this one is used in L models ,the type with a DOJ type center joint used in LS and LS L models ,the giggest problem with putting u joints in subaru shafts is they are staked in place at the factory ,i talked with a few shop here and they wont touch one because pressing them apart stresses the yokes and they crack a few miles after use
you can buy new factory one for 500.00 good luck |

![]() Thanks to 1986nate for the part, and everyone else (especially Tom) for your advise. I looked at the old part and compared it's motion to my replacement. The front U-joint could rotate a little bit on it's own and felt flimsy, the mechanic said he'd never seen one that bad. Lucky me it didn't come off while driving. I wonder what could have resulted in this failure. I'm sure that 200k miles had a lot to do with it, but when I bought my car the rear diff bushings as well as subframe mounts had a lot of play in them. I've since installed Earthworm bushings and done the 15min mod, so it's pretty tight now, but I wonder if the rear end wiggling could have caused this. It was apparently already on it's way out when I purchased the car because it's always vibrated a little during hard acceleration, but not any more. Everything feels tight and smooth at all speeds up to 70mph, so I'm a happy camper. BTW, I should clear the name of Doug's Legacy Automotive while I'm at it. They were sold the wrong part by a wrecker, and didn't charge me a thing for their attempt to fix it last week. Talking to the guy this morning, he had a lot of the typical misconceptions about SVX's but he loves working on Subarus and with me around he'll get a few more tries at the SVX. Nice guy, fair rate, and totally agrees with me that Subaru hasn't built anything worth owning in the past two years. If you're in LA and can't find a mechanic, give him a shout.
