Transmission parts
Check out svxfiles locker for all the parts needed:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?svxfiles And to quote svxfiles,"95-96-97-& Early 98 Legacy Outback/Legacy GT/Legacy LSI/Forester/Impreza 2.5 RS with 4EAT automatic transmission, and 2.5 engine. Get the transmission that DOES NOT HAVE the spin on transmission filter located on the drivers side, behind the bellhousing, above the left front corner of the transmission oil pan."

?
Now you quote all these cars that you can get the trans from. My question is, are they all the same transmission? (with or w/o tranny filter). I mean, if your going to go thru the cost of doing it, I would presume people would want the best possible tranny to go in. So what is it?

James.
The newer the transmission, the more factory updates/upgrades it will have, unless it is a factory rebuilt trans, and then it would have the latest upgrades, unless it was rebuilt by a professsional, who knew more than Subaru. And then the best one would be the one that had the easiest life, most frequent trans oil changes, no short trips, not driver like a teenage boy on prom night, not drag raced, you get the picture. Is a LSI probibly driven easier than a GT, a Forester easier than an Legacy Outback, it depends who was driving it. They are basicly all the same, same gear ratios anyway. So you pay your money, and you take your chances. I have a customer who bought his own 66,000 mile 1996 Legacy outback transmission and rear end , plus extras, for $400.00 delivered. Sounds like a great deal. Untill the front differential starts whining, and turns to trash 500 miles later. The good news is if He gets a replacement in time, before his 30 day warranty runs out, they (the wrecking yard that he bought the transmission from) pay for the transmission. The bad news is He has to pay again for the labor to replace the bad transmission, and a new filter, and new trans oil,, and a new gasket. The only way to be sure you are buying a good one is to buy a new one, and at $4200 or so few people will. Tom
