4.44 Limited Slip Rear Update.
As a Subaru Sales Representive I was told by Subaru that the 98-99 Legacy Outback Limited, 98-99 Legacy Outback with the Cold Weather Package along with some other models, came with a Viscus Limited Slip Rear Differential.
I now know this is incorrect!  I just found out today, that the 2001 Impreza 2.5 RS (automatic) rear end WILL NOT WORK EITHER! It has a pin in the center, and only one splined ring on each side, making it incompatable with our axles. This leaves swapping the SVX carrier into the doner rear as the only way to go, untill someone gets a Forester S LSD, or Legacy GT Limited rear and proves otherwise.  Tom

I had this problem when shopping for a 4.44 diff. I went to a junkyard 2 hours away for a 2001 RS diff and found - ta da - the pin. I was ripped.
My solution was to have my shop swap the 4.44 gears into my rear diff.

I drove 2.5 hours two weeks ago to get a 99 Legacy Outback Limited rear, in 16f weather
 , and it was NOT a limited slip.About a week before that I was under a 98 Legacy Outback wagon with the cold weather package, and IT did not have the LSD! The rear I saws today, 01 2.5 RS, could well be a LSD, but it will not work with our axles. It is possable that newer 2000+ up Legacy Outbacks (2000 with cold pkg) and 2001 Legacy Outbacks are compatable with the SVX axles, but as of now, I/we do not yet know.
