Getting ready to do it myself
OK, im just about ready to go ahead and attempt to replace my inoperative knock sensor myself. I am going to pick it up from AutoZone tommorrow, and it only costs about $40. The thing is, ordering the same part online from Subaruparts.com lists it at around $70. So is the one from Autozone crappier and something I should avoid, or are they the same essential thing, and subaruparts.com is a rip off? They are both the same part number, so I cant see how they would be different. Also, the code that I get is knock sensor #2, so is that the passenger side or driver side knock sensor? And one last thing, if anyone has ever done a knock sensor replacement themselves on an SVX, I would appreciate any tips or help, because right now, all I have is the Technical Service Bulletin off of the Subaru SVX information warehouse. Any help would be appreciated.

Drivers side.
See if this helps. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...iles/23593.jpg 01) use a long extention through front intake manifold cover. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...iles/23599.jpg 02) If the alternator is removed, you can reach the sensor through the front http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...iles/23600.jpg 03) a 12mm flex socket is very helpful Its from my locker.

I can't find the knock sensor on subaruparts.com can you post a link?
Edit: Never mind I found it only using Knock as the search term and its only 50 minus shipping and the diagram only shows one(notthat that would make much difference) I'm thinking of getting the cable too. Link.... http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=090-A What is the number for the cable for it?

All finished!
OK, I just replaced the #2 knock sensor. It took 6 hours of constant work, and that was with alittle help from a friend. If it had been #1, then I could have gotten it out in about 1 hour, it was so close to me! But unfortunately, that one wasnt bad. The alternator removal was extremely easy, thank in a large part to the pictures and tips that everyone here provided to me. The result of this experience: No CEL, more power, better gas mileage (I have yet to actually experience that), and a feeling of self satisfaction. Thank you to everyone for your help and advice, because it saved my ass.
P.S.: The 2 hardest parts were re-threading the bolt that I had to remove, and unclipping the old sensor from its wire. The way I got around the old sensor problem was to clip the wire in the middle, pull the end out, and that made it easier to get at. Also, I disconnected the engine temperature sensor and a few hoses, just to add some extra room. The way I got around the re-threading bolt problem: Patience and curse words. |

I had a second person with a long screwdriver through the intake holding the bolt in place while I attempted to start the threads.

Yeah I tried that for awhile with someone holding a stick, but eventually, he got too frustrated, and couldnt deal with it anymore. Luckily, im more patient then him...

patience? it takes a moderate amount of patience to do anything to this car lol... connecting the CAI to the throttle bodies almost drove me mad... defilitely a dumb idea to have them so close together.... then again... all of my past cars have been american V8's (Ford 4.6 and 5.4)... much easier to work on
