New Stereo!!!

Now I know you all are gonna laugh at me with your modern "mp3 players" and subwoofers that put out 800 watts of bump, but I just installed a factory Subaru 6-Disk in-dash CD changer in my car.

I wanted something that would look stock and actually play CDs and it looks and works great! I hightly recomend it to anyone that wants a stock looking stereo upgrade.

What you need:
-A stereo! (I went with the slightly older black model, with the cassette player too [it was off an '02 wrx], but the newer silver model without a cassette player would work to.) - I got it off ebay for $112
-Wiring harnesses - I can't remember his name, but from a member on this site I got a wrx reverse harness and an SVX forward harness. THEY ARE FANTASTIC, for $30 total.

Other points:
-You'll need to cut out the back of your SVX's stereo cage with a hack saw so the stereo goes back all the way.
-Solder the wiring harnesses together, but first cut off more then half the total length of the wires so it's easier to fit back there.
-I had to carve to circular grooves in the bottom trim on the Stereo case's door, so it could open and close over the stereo's volume knobs.

Anyway, I really love it, so I thought you all might like to know what you can do to your car for only $140 - $160. I'll try and post pictures later if there's interest.

Oh yeah, I'll also advertise the person I got the harnesses from, because it's such a great product.

Thumbs up Me too!

Howdy Big Cheese!

I also installed a double din factory unit from an 04 Forester into my Legacy Twin Turbo, it works great. Bought it from a guy in Seattle, it was from his Mom's car. The unit had no tape player, and she wanted to play her tapes, c'est la vie.

It is really useful in the Legacy estate, as it holds 6 CDs. So you don't need an autochanger in the boot, which would be in the way for those estate style jobs, getting thumped with bicycles and ladders, getting used as a scratching post by the dog, you know the way.....

As it is not a diversity unit, there is only one aerial socket, so like the SVX with two aerial feeds, I can only use the one from the outside mast. Works OK though, I like it.

I find it funny that everyone in the UK calls wagons, "estates". It just cracks me up everytime I hear the announcers talk about one on Top Gear!!!!

P.S. Okay, back to your regularly scheduled thread about the WRX stereo installed in the SVX....

Ok. Then I should re-phrase my statement and say Europe...

De nada

Think nothing of it Chike, I know it was an honest mistake.

We are not blameless over here. I have met quite a few Canadians who are not happy about being identified as Americans by their accent [even though they hail from the North American continent!]

And if you want to really start a conflagration, try calling a New Zealand Kiwi an Aussie, or vice versa, even though their accents sound the same to us northern races. Jeezz, now you blew it!....

I'll testify to that: I'm no flamin' kiwi!

As a side note to those people who want to install stereos: I had the fortune of having peices of the carpet out of the SVX when I was fooling around with the interior in the rear of the car. I have no idea what I was doing; I can't remember, but I had a rare flash of genius while I was there.

I was expecting to do a stereo install later, and while I had everything out...

I ran a length of convoluted tubing (the black plastic ribbed hose, can come with a split down the side) through my car from the footwell back through to rear bootspace. I did this both sides (one side for power, one side for data). BEFORE you install the tubing, run some twine through the tubing, with a washer or something tied to both ends (I used a ZipLok) to stop it from being lost in the tube.

When it comes to install time, attach wires, pull through, viola! No messing around, no fuss - AND the wiring is protected by the tubing so it does not get crushed/cut/worn through by anything. Saved me an hours labour later (either paying for it with my own time or an installer charging me per hour).

I suggest anyone who is having any part of the interior out, or wants to 'bank' some time when they have nothing to do - do this. It saves a minor headache later.
