Want to see something horrifying?
I'll skip straight to the gory pictures... This is what I found when I removed my rear struts last month to install my coilovers.
The other one isn't as bad... It still shows signs of structural integrity. The mount was also worn out. When I was driving the car with the rear interior removed I could see the whole thing bouncing around over bumps. I don't even want to know what would have happened if I'd left it to the point that the whole thing collapsed... I suspect that my front struts aren't the originals, they look and function MUCH better than the rears. The bearings turn perfectly, the shocks aren't leaking...

Re: Want to see something horrifying?
My left rear looked exactly like that when I did mine this summer. I knew it was gone because I was losing ride height in that corner. After I removed the spring I was able to crumble it in my hands. The right one was stiill somewhat sound.
Did you reach up into the strut tower to see what condition they were in. Mine were flaking away quite badly on the inboard side. Last edited by Blacky; 12-05-2010 at 08:40 PM. |

Re: Want to see something horrifying?
That's very common. The design causes crap to get trapped up there and they just rot away. I've seen some svxs where the whole things collapsed.

I would not be surprised if mine were at least that bad.

Re: Want to see something horrifying?
The mounts that came off my silver SVX were that far gone. I was about 150 miles from home when I began to hear a racket from beneath the package shelf. I'd had no idea they were that bad.
The guy at subaruparts.com said there weren't many of these things left on the shelves. dcb |

Re: Want to see something horrifying?
I worry mine are that bad, but the underside is rust free so I hope its not that way.

Re: Want to see something horrifying?
If they could just figure out how to keep the roads clear without salt.

Up here they use gratuitous amounts of scraping and dirt/pebbles and the lanes clear themselves just being being driven through. There's no need for salt.
