Re: Bore Size?
100mm was the bore in the EFI Logics 3.3RS. There's a build thread on it here... It made 318 WHP, all motor.

Re: Bore Size?
Anyone know of anyone else who used that big of a bore?
I haven't been able to find much further information, but from the pics it looks like it's stock and they just bored it to 100mm. Any reason I couldn't just do the same?

Re: Bore Size?
At 100mm it will be just a hair bigger than an STi. Which is similar to what NeedForSpeed is doing with his 3.7. I've been playing with the idea lately and my machinist recommends tossing sleeves in just for safety.

Re: Bore Size?
Very close. Displacement = # of cylinders x pi x (bore/2)^2 x stroke
So the stock EG33 is 96.9mm bore and 75 stroke, which is 3318 cc. 100mm bore with the same stroke would be 3534 cc. Stroked to 79mm like needforspeed is doing, but with the stock bore would be 3503 cc. And with the 100mm bore would be 3723 cc. So two possible EG35s are possible and also an EG37. It would be nice to both stroke and bore it, but it would just cost way too much, and I think more benefit would come from just boring it than just stroking it. Especially considering my kind of modest goals.

This is the EFI logics car after the 100mm bore: Doesn't look like they did anything other than bore it to me. If it worked well for them at 400+ HP than I would think it would be safe enough. (Anyone with more knowledge/experience than myself feel free to chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.)

Re: Bore Size?
I agree. Since you are planning a turbo build, are you going to buy off the shelf STi pistons?

Re: Bore Size?
I do not believe that STi pistons would suffice, even with the bigger bore. I think the valve sizes and more importantly the angles would be an issue.
I'd also like to keep it non-interference if possible, and still have the cams, so I also need to make sure that the valve cutouts leave plenty of room. Extra room for bigger valves would be a plus.

Re: Bore Size?
STi pistons would be fine, but might as well go aftermarket.
From what I can tell the SVX heads were the early example of what ended up being the early WRX/STi heads. Early WRX heads which ended up on the 1996 2.5L outback. So there is a US source for data on crossing early heads with the longer stroke and bore. |

Re: Bore Size?
If you have access to a decent machine shop, then sleeving isn't that difficult. I'll head over to mine today and ask him about cost and all that fun stuff.
I know this is slightly off topic, but I'd also consider making it semi-closed deck.

There are 2 decent machine shops in Tampa, and at least a couple in Orlando that I know of. What exactly does sleeving entail?

Re: Bore Size?
Well, I'm a mediocre machinist at best and I've never personally sleeved a block but to the best of my knowledge you bore out the block to the diameter of the sleeves then press fit and pin them in. I didn't get a chance to swing by the machinist I use, so I'll have to get back to you on his process and price.

Re: Bore Size?
So you're just replacing some of the cylinder wall material with a stronger inner wall?

Re: Bore Size?
Yessir. There are a few variations, i.e. wet and dry sleeves, but that is the basic idea.
