Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
I have my gold BBS wheels off now, and am debating whether or not to paint them. I like the gold but they are a little flashy and scream "look at me" a little more than I like.
I was thinking of doing a metallic gray, darker than the stock silver BBS but lighter than gunmetal. It would be a DIY job and done with the tires still on. Opinions? What do you all think, bad idea or easy winter project?

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
Hardest part is working with the tires on the rim . moving them and keeping the paint off the tires . I put a small film of Vaseline around the bead so the paint won't stick to the tire. If you don't have to do a lot of sanding it should work out .

""I was thinking of doing a metallic gray, darker than the stock silver BBS but lighter than gunmetal.""
I think that would look just about perfect. They are good quality wheels, so it's probably worth it to take extra time and pay extra attention and do a great DIY job.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
neat trick to unseat the beads for a better paint job: lay the wheel under the rotor and lower the car until it pushes the bead back. then you can paint them almost as if the tire wasn't on the rim.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
Matallic gray sounds like an awesome way to go... I'm not very keen on Gold rims to begin with so my opinion may be slightly biased

My Photoshop Ideas
OEM Gold - Current Set Up OEM Silver when I had these I thought they were a little too light. Option 1 Darker Silver my goal I think. Option 2 Dark Gray. Too dark I think.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
^option 1 looks good. I think a teensy bit darker might be better though. Closer to option 1 than 2 of course, just 1 small step darker. The black lugs would definitely be a good thing too.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
No thanks, I like the regular logo better than the "Horns".

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
Me too! I was talking about finding a way to get the "regular logo" a gold finish to match the gold wheels! I think the chrome "regular logo" would not look right with gold wheels... but that is just me.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
I think you are right. The gold doesn't look right with gray. Gray or even black rims would look nice. I don't think the dark gray were too dark but whatever gray tone you go with should look good on that car.
For gold, I think it had to be a black, burgundy, claret or teal car. Gold goes particularly well with green (I'm not a Notre Dame fan but I admit it looks good). Both gold and silver are good with black. Brighter reds like silver and darker reds like gold or silver. I'm going out of my comfort zone and going gold with my teal.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
I think the gold looks best on the clarets, bordeauxs and ebonys

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.
Use cue cards or something along those lines to mask the tire when painting, like this:
A lot less work and irritation than some of the other techniques suggested. Unseating a tire with your brake rotor... Having worked in a tire shop for several years that idea doesn't sit well with me. Some tires let go very easily, others are much more difficult. Particularly low profile, sport tires like one would often find on a set of 17" BBS rims. Partially supporting your 2 ton car on a rubber bag that will suddenly let go at an unpredictable moment really sounds like a recipe for getting hurt. And yes, gold+ebony =
