Re: 5sp Guys, Get in Here- Clutch Slipping Issue
Yes, I remember now. You can mix and match them, but you have to use the clutch fork and throw-out bearing that matches the pressure plate. The holes for the throw-out bearings are different diameters.

Re: 5sp Guys, Get in Here- Clutch Slipping Issue
Alright so after more research and seeing bad reviews on the XTD and other cheap clutches, I went with "Competition Clutch" stage 2. It was $300 shipped on eBay. Decent reviews, but a fairly new company so we'll see. I've only got 50 miles on it as of now. I just didn't have the cash for a Spec or other name brand, so it is what it is. (oh and the old F1 that I yanked out was down to the rivets on the friction disk. Pressure plate and flywheel had lots of blue/purple heat spots and cracks)
One question for you guys. I noticed that if I slip the clutch a bit while driving, like on an incline and I "ride" it a bit, I get a really bad clutch burning smell. It's only done it twice, since I generally don't slip the clutch much when driving. Is this normal for a 5 speed swap or not? My old F1 clutch did the same thing, but it always did it, from the day I installed it till the day I took it out. If you slipped the clutch too much, you'd get a burning smell. I chalked it up to being a cheap clutch. This Competition Clutch seems a little grabbier than the old F1, so it kind of makes you drive it "on or off" with not much pedal travel for slipping. But I'm trying to be nice to it during break in, and not let it grab too violently. Sometime the 3rd gear shift just seems like it grabs really hard and you can feel the AWD jolt a bit.

Anybody? I've got 100 miles on it now and all seems well, but still has a burning smell if you slip it too much from a stand still.

Re: 5sp Guys, Get in Here- Clutch Slipping Issue
I went to a doctor once and told him if I lift my leg high in the air it hurts and he told me the same thing . DON"T do that anymore. Mine has no smell to it . Keep it (slipping it ) up and you will be replacing it . You didn't put the burnt flywheel in there did you? You should use a new one or resurface it. Or did a new one come with the clutch ?

Re: 5sp Guys, Get in Here- Clutch Slipping Issue
I had the flywheel resurfaced. Yes I get it, don't do slip it and it won't smell. But you guys seem to be missing the point about how harshly it engages if you don't slip. If you slip it too much, it burns. If you don't slip it at all, it feels like you're just dropping the clutch for a hard launch. You get an awesome jolt and clunk noise from the AWD. Sooo I'm stuck trying to concentrate on getting the engagement just right from every stoplight, lest my passengers ask "what's that smell?" or "Jesus are we racing somewhere?".
I'm just asking if this type of stuff is normal with this specific swap/application. I've never had this type of issue with a clutch, and I've installed quite a few in my 5+ years at a dealership.

Re: 5sp Guys, Get in Here- Clutch Slipping Issue
Sorry.
I never get a smell with a Spec clutch, and have not noticed it on the XTD in The Racer.

Re: 5sp Guys, Get in Here- Clutch Slipping Issue
My clutch grabs hard. You have to get use to it . The 1st time I drove it for the test drive I had the P.O. in stitches . We were bucking all over the place . If you are not use to a stiff clutch it is a new experience .
Answer to the question NO!!! I smell no clutch even if I ride the clutch , like backing out of the garage or up the drive way. |
