Trailer Hitch Questions
I'm moving across the country in a couple months, and trying to find my best options. I literally have a drumset, fold-up mattresses, a bike, and 10 plastic rubber maid bins. I'm not about to rent a 10' uhaul truck for $2000 for that little amount of stuff. Does anyone have or no of companies that would charge somewhere under $1000 for it? My other option would be to get a small uhaul trailer (or one of my own) and have someone fab up a hitch for me. What weight would I be able to pull? Still on the stock transmission, but I do have an aftermarket cooler in it. Could I safely pull 1,000lbs? 500lbs?

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
I built one with the help from a guy at work. I used the plans that I found on this site somewhere within the old lockers or how to docs. It was pretty simple to make, and I hauled quite a bit with it when I moved a couple years ago, it's really solid. It required drilling two holes into the car
My car is a 4.444 swap. I pulled a 4x8 uhaul trailer loaded up with some heavy stuff. I didn't weigh it, but there was plenty of weight in there and the SVX didn't mind too much, though my trek was mountain-free, with just some hills to contend with, but the trip was around 600 miles each time. I did remove the center grill to give it some extra air, as it was well over 100 deg. when I did this and that kept things cool. The gauge did move up a little on some hills when the center grill was in there. I think you'd be fine to haul the stuff you've listed. A trans temp. gauge might be a good investment though just to be sure. I've also used the Harbor freight ATV luggage rack that plugs into a receiver hitch tube with good success to hold some coolers and luggage Edit - here's the link with all you need: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ht=hitch+tuzem

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
[IMG][/IMG]I can pull my trike with it on a 6x10 trailer...
I have pictures of what it looks like . Cost me $30.00 to build it. Here is a good picture of what you have to fabricate.. The plate with the 2 holes bolts to the rear axle plate. Need more photos.?

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
Thanks for the replies, I've actually seen all of your photos and posts about the hitches, I want to know more if it's a safe decision or not to haul it across the country. I would get a trailer such as this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/950-lb-...res-42709.html and probably put another 3-400lbs on it, if that even. Hell, I've had almost 900lbs worth of people in the car at one time with rusted out strut mounts. Also, I've never attempted something like this, but I'm sure someone near me could help out. Edit: I'm also going to need to wire this somehow. How did you guys go about that? I'm not about to make a 2500 mile journey with no lights on it... Also, I'd like to have it removable. And I DON'T want to drill holes anywhere that's visible like the bumper.

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
Talk to svxfiles.
He fabricated one that bolted directly to the two tow hooks below the rear bumper. Completely reversible. .

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
The design based on ConnSVX is easily removed, although if you use a removable receiver type hitch, the whole thing sits rather low and does not protrude from the rear of the car. I've left mine on since installation.
It bolts through the Tow hooks, and there is one bolt underneath that would need to be undone to remove it. The only holes to be drilled are not seen unless you are under the car. I wired mine up with a standard trailer wiring kit I got at Autozone or some such place. Just make sure you get the right kit. There are a couple based on the type of turn signals. It's very easy to get at the wiring in the SVX to hook it up. You can leave everything in the trunk and just pass the plug out to the hitch and close the trunk on it when needed. Were I you, I'd upgrade to the similar trailer with the 14" tires. Those little 8" tires will be spinning awful fast at highway speeds. Oh and make sure you have at least one spare tire for the trailer (and the matching lug wrench) The SVX will be fine with proper trans cooling to tow your stuff. They are not the fragile snowflakes that some make them out to be.

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
Hitch can be removed in 15 min. 500 lb should be no problem. 1,000 lb long distance maybe. I have towed 1500 GVW. Around town no problems ith my 92 automatic . Have not tried th 5 speed. View of installed hitch.
Great rear end protection...

Re: Trailer Hitch Questions
I'm going to go weigh all of my boxes and see how much it is. I also forgot that I have my stock wheels with snow tires, that's a lot of weight. I'm still considering other options, but this looks like my cheapest. It definitely won't be if I break down in Texas with no transmission, though. What is a safe weight, trailer included, to tow? I DO have a transmission cooler.

If anyone has a trailer hitch made, have two made, and I'll buy the other one from you.
