belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
Ok I put some new belts on and when I put the bolt back it tqured down like that but I know its not right cause there is to much silver threads and ect... but the reason is changed my belts is cause I started hearing that squeek, then checked the belts and saw that they were cracked and needed to be replaced... so I did that. But it still squeeks and I also noticed that when I turn that it squeeks... so I had some one turn the wheel and noticed that the pully on the power steering pump slows down and the belt runs over it so it squeek(note: did the same thing with other belts) I posted some pictures so u could see what I'm talking about.
Ps. The belts r tighten down and its driveable but still squeeks How tight should the belts be? thank you for reading hope I can get the squeek out of my car |

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
I am not sure what the problem is, but check out the How-To Documents and look under the belt change and see if you did it the same way.

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
I guess the bigger concern is that my power steering pump pully is slowing down and the belt running over it does that have something to do with the pump going out?

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
Runs fine after it warms up?
Thats the way my PS is. Squeaks for a bit at start up, but after being warmed up operates fine while driving. Before the car warms up if I turn the wheel the PS pulley stops or slows dramatically just like your experiencing. I replaced o-ring with little to no change. Possibly a rebuild will fix it. Thats my plan next summer. I plan on doing quite a few other projects when I return from my "fun in the sun" for a year.

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
Try replacing the O-ring first, and if that doesn't fix it, then you may need a rebuilt pump.

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
Ok then it sounds like a rebuild might be needed so I might do that but would the tenison of the belt matter in this sence? (I read the how to on the rebuild and I think I will try that soon)
What O ring should I replace...(first) just to see if that helps and might not have to go through the build Btw this car is a 94 L wonding if the P.S. pump is different then the awd models It runs better when its warmed up but still get that squeek... (doesn't happen as often) |

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
The o-ring should be in how to docs. Its on the under side of the PS reservoir. Not difficult at all.

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
Just tighten the belts a bit more, and check it periodically. new belts will "form fit" your pulleys a bit and in effect loosen. I just replaced mine and that was the exact problem (as far as the screeching goes). As for ps pumps, mine needs the new O ring, but it doesn't squeak, it whines/grinds and is awfully loud. Is your ps pump loud? or is it just the belts at cold start? If its only at cold start, just tighten the belts a bit more. They should have a good resistance, but nothing crazy!

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
No the pump is not making any noise its just the belt getting riped through the pully when it slows down and runs over.
It happens mainly when I turn the wheel when I'm at a stand still or take of and get on the gas and turn |

Re: belts squeeking and power steering pump stuff
Tighten the belt. Are you sure you tightened the belt correctly? Loosen the nut on the idler pulley, and then tighten the adjustment bolt till it's tight then re-righten the nut on the idler pulley. The belt should be tight enough that it should deflect slightly when you push down on it. If it doesn't deflect, then it's too tight and if it deflects a lot, then it's too loose.
Also a new belt will stretch out a little, so you'll have to tighten it again later on.

This should help!!
Oh and then of course tighten bolt 1 again, start your car and turn the wheel. |
