Re: Total manual transmission SVXs on the Network

Just curious. Can you put the gear(s) for 6th gear on a 6MT in a 5MT for 5th gear?

I am almost 100% sure, no. Would you be trying for a taller or shorter 5th gear?

I can back this up with another 'almost 100% sure' answer of "no."

In the 6MT 5th & 6th come as a set and are, I think, on the same shaft. Internally (and externally for that matter) the two gearboxes are completely different. Different "families" even, for lack of a better word.

Taller...assuming I get the difference correctly.

From what I recall, tallest top gear in any manual Subaru makes would be the Legacy Spec.B; 3.90 final drive with .707 6th. The JDM Forester STi also has the .707 6th, but I think it might have been 4.44 final drive.

Next highest, probably the more recent (08-09?) WRX with 3.70 diffs, and I think .738 5th gear. Other WRXes also get this 5th gear, but with 3.90s.

Ultimately, the 3.70 & .738 combo is the taller of the two, but not by any noticeable amount. The 3.90/.738 WRX is easier to find by far. USDM STi boxes are a good option if you want a 6MT - 3.90s with .756 6th (or something) - pretty close to the WRX.

Food for thought, if you're thinking about swapping.

I ended up with the same ratios as Icingdeath. My highway mileage went from about 30mpg to 25 or so, and I drive slower now (55-65mph instead of 70-75). If I could do it all over again, I would have gone for the Spec.B gearbox, despite not having a limited slip in the front diff. An LSD in the front can actually hurt street performance (cornering) unless you're driving through snow and slush or mud, which, most of us just don't do.

Re: Total manual transmission SVXs on the Network

Yes, it would be difficult to find an STi 6mt with as tall of a 6th gear as a WRX's 5th. The 6th gear isn't there for gas mileage. The goal is closer gearing throughout, so that you can always have the exact right gear to keep you in the rev range, to better utilize the turbo. The 6mt is for getting around the track (or w/e) faster and handling tons of power with ease.

I don't know how easy it would be to find a legacy spec B gearbox, but that sounds like it would be just the ticket for an SVX. And I'm sure you can have a LSD swapped in if you wanted.

Yea, I'm not crazy about the super short 5th and 6th gears. Not a good match for the mountains of low-end torque the EG33 has. Fun, sure, but not really that helpful that I've found. If I were to do it all over I'd use an '06 USDM 6mt. More reasonable gearing, not much compromise. I could probably even trade my V7 6mt for a DCCD one actually, if it were more practical. If it ever comes out, I'm going to get the 5th and 6th gearset from an 06 USDM sti and have them swapped in.

According to Alldata, they quote a new-from-dealer price of about $5500, last time I checked. Based on that, I haven't bothered to actually ask a dealership parts department. If I ever need to pull mine, I may inquire, assuming I can still get decent coin for my old one (or I'll save it for an offroad project).

Yeah, that's been my experience and conclusions as well.

I actually asked about this when I had my swap done. The guy doing it quoted me about 10 hours labour to swap the gears. A 5th & 6th gearset runs about $400, IIRC. I decided to live with the shorter ratios "for now." I put so few miles on my car now that I can't even justify it at all. Maybe someday.

Re: Total manual transmission SVXs on the Network

The 2008-2009 Spec B have the same 6th gear as the '08 US STI. I'm not sure about the '09 STI. These are by far the tallest gears you're going to get.

I have a hell of a time in some instances trying to mash into some people's heads that just because it's called 6th gear doesn't necessarily mean it's taller than 5th! The 5th gear in my '00 RS equipped Pearly is comparable to 6th in the Silver. The only real difference is the number of shifts it takes to get there. With the extra guts from the supercharger, I don't need to hit all the gears and usually skip some. It's a lot of rowing otherwise!

Er, back to your regularly scheduled list thread...
