It may not be commonly referred to as "Freon Poisoning" but it is not safe to inhale the gas. I stand by my recommendation that a fan should be used and adequate ventilation is a REQUIREMENT. Otherwise a person can become quite ill when working with freon. That is the MSDS for R-12, which is what came standard in our vehicles. If you want to know about R-134a you can look here... http://www.refrigerants.com/msds/r134a.pdf

As a chemist, I agree.

Re: Attempting Timing Belt / Water Pump Replacement - Tips/Advice.
I have two questions. Other than the time/effort to get to the water pump, is there a reason to replace the water pump when replacing the timing belt and is there a high volume/upgrade water pump such as an electric water pump? If I'm going to replace the water pump even if it's still good, I'd like to replace it with an upgrade and not just a stock unit.

belt cover, belts, coolant radiator, hoses, battery ground, alternator, power steering pump, timing belt, covers, AC tentioner, TB rollers, WHY NOT? I have recently seen a 98k stock original water pump worn to the point that its going on the fail shelf!2) Unless you make your own, or modify a stock water pump, as far as I know they don't exist.

Re: Attempting Timing Belt / Water Pump Replacement - Tips/Advice.
If you are talking about R-12, Actually they are not. If they were insanely toxic or even toxic, none of us would be here to talk about it. Several generations ago freon was used as a propellant for everything, including hair spray. All the girls and moms and grand-moms would be found in their bathrooms... lying on the floor... dead!
The danger with R-12 was if it released in an area in a great enough quantity to displace the air, and lack of air to breath can cause death... not because it is "insanely toxic" icingdeath88, Chemist or no Chemist, this is actually the way it is! Re: Attempting Timing Belt / Water Pump Replacement - Tips/Advice.
Keith, just because you say or think something does not make it true. Refer back to the MSDS i posted on R-12.
EDIT: Here... Higher exposures may cause irritation of the upper respiratory passages, with coughing and discomfort; temporary nervous system depression with anaesthetic effects such as dizziness, headache, confusion, incoordination, and loss of consciousness; temporary alteration of the heart’s electrical activity with irregular pulse, palpitations, or inadequate circulation. Gross overexposure may cause fatality.

I realize that I can get banned by simply responding to mean remarks from people that are not able to "read and understand the words". Simply responding to a viscous attack did it before. I don't know if you are a "member of the club" or not, but this is my response anyway... I said all that to say... Nothing that I said about r-12 counteracts your statement that is quoted in this post. The difference is that after studying refrigeration for 60 years and being in the refrigeration business for 60 years with an amplitude for what I am doing, I understand it, I explained it to you, you found the MSDS. We are a team! In case you missed it... Nothing I said about r-12 counteracts any thing you have said. Keith |

Re: Attempting Timing Belt / Water Pump Replacement - Tips/Advice.
AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway...
...getting back on topic... I'm about replace my t-belt and water pump. Does anyone know the torque specs on the various bolts? I don't have a manual and just want to make sure I'm tightening things properly. I've done a few searches, but I'm not coming up with much. Maybe I just need to look more - I'll do that in the meantime, but if anyone knows the torque specs for the pulleys especially, I'd appreciate having them. Thanks. __________________________________ >>>>>>>>>>>>>UPDATE<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Nevermind - I found plenty of data on torque specs (helps if you spell torque with the "q" in the right spot)

Re: Attempting Timing Belt / Water Pump Replacement - Tips/Advice.
UPDATE:
and A HUGE THANKS to Huck. He has helped me enormously in the past with XT6 related issues (up to and including driving 15+ hours from his home in Kentucky to mine in Jacksonville to swap cars w/ me while he took mine back to KY for repairs!). In the ten years or so I've known him he's always been willing to go the extra mile and then some to help. I can't say enough about the man. This time while on a trip with his family to Disney World, he stayed with us and helped me change my T-belt and water pump. He also noticed my crank pulley was separating (something I probably wouldn't have noticed at all), and went with me to the junk yard to get one from a Legacy. I might have been able to do it without his help, but it would have taken me forever and I probably would have missed the crank pulley issue. Huck knocked it out in an amazingly short time and the car is running great now.
