Re: Subaru BRZ Coupe Announced!

I'm looking forward to seeing it too, but wish they could have made it AWD then they would have finally had a successor to the SVX.

Its a four cylinder that LOOKS like it has a blower under the manifold.

Re: Subaru BRZ Coupe Announced!

Only a 4 cylinder block and they couldn't fit a center differential? And why not an H6? They could even offer a supercharged or turbocharged H6. Subaru is going backwards fast. Their most expensive model has unacceptable quality issues (rapidly deteriorating front sway bar bushings, failing door bracket welds, warping rotors, rapidly corroding contacts on sensors, vibrations at highway speeds and so on). My last Outback (2002) also seemed to be of lesser quality that the first generation Outback I owned (1997). The SVX's issues are well documented here as are the head gasket issues, rotor issues, wheel bearing issues and oil leaking issues along all products in their lineup.

Honestly, my next car will probably be a Honda Crosstour AWD at this point.

Well now, that would be about 2/3 or what dreams are made of, yeh?

Folks got a lil' catchin' up to do around these parts. The intent of this car (which will also be a Scion) is to be a light, inexpensive car. Scrubbing the AWD and moving the engine back reduces weight and cost and helps balance. This is not meant to be a flagship or the third iteration of the Alcyone.

In other words, Tony, the reason you're disappointed with this steak is because it's actually a BLT.

Re: Subaru BRZ Coupe Announced!

Maybe if the car becomes successful they will put out a AWD version. I am looking forward to seeing the design, but I have mixed feelings, it would suck to buy a Subaru that you couldn't drive in the winter, and there are a lot of other RWD coupes now. A AWD sport coupe would really distinguish it as a Subaru while a RWD just puts it in with a bunch of other competitors. Still I am happy to see that Subaru is finally, finally coming out with another coupe, and hopefully they won't make it ugly.

Re: Subaru BRZ Coupe Announced!

if this had AWD and a turbo, i would definitely have bought one, assuming the styling wasn't too goofy.

i wanted a small quick car with good handling i could drive all year. even the STi's and EVO's aren't that little anymore - the freakin' WRX/STi's are now as big as my previous '05 Legacy was.

after having several 300+ hp cars, 200hp or less isn't going to cut it, no matter how light the thing is. its basically just going to be a RWD Scion.

Center diff isn't the problem, it's the front diff. Removing it allows them to mount the engine several inches lower and farther back. Lower C of G, better weight distribution...

Too heavy and unnecessary. The car is supposed to come in sub-3000 lbs, and a well tuned 4-cylinder is plenty for that.

Impossible using Subaru's current systems, the engine will literally sit where the front axles would normally go. Unless you can figure out a way to put a differential inside a crankcase it's not going to work.

And what's so wrong with it not having AWD? Yes, I know that's Subaru's signiture feature, but has anyone here ever driven a lightweight, well balanced, RWD coupe? S2000, 240SX, Miata... In terms of fun to drive these cars will stomp every modern Subaru all day long. And as for winter... Throw a set of snow tires on it. If you still get into trouble you're doing something wrong.

Yup, it's quoted as being a "2+2", which means four seats.

Personally I think this kind of car is exactly what the auto industry needs. There's a significant dearth of fun, affordable and good looking cars... and while we don't yet know the details of what the Subaru is going to look like we can make a pretty educated guess from the other cars built on the same platform.

While I am excited to get my 135i because it is two of those three in my opinion, it isn't affordable. At least to many. It's a small, cute and incredibly fun car to drive but like most cars that fit that profile these days it's ridiculously expensive. My car MSRP's for $49,000 or thereabouts... though I'm personally not paying close to that.

Honestly, I applaud what they're claiming to try to do. My only fear is that it's going to end up being either underpowered for its weight (a common problem with Subarus), or stupidly expensive compared to similar cars in its class.

Still, I have high hopes; rear wheel drive is perfectly usable in most instances with a good set of snow tires... and you can pick up a set of snow tires already mounted on the rims for less than a grand. As for switching the wheels... when I had my BMW 330i I could switch my winter wheels on in less than an hour with just a floor jack and a tire tool. If I used my air tools I could do it even quicker.

Subaru BRZ Coupe

Came across this:

Subaru BRZ Coupe named
Subaru has named its take on the Toyota FT-86 Coupe the BRZ, and confirmed it for a Frankfurt debut
Subau BRZ
By Jack Rix
23rd August 2011

Subaru has confirmed that a 'technology concept' of its 2+2 coupe – co-developed with the Toyota FT-86 – will debut at Frankfurt. And the firm has revealed that the production car will be called BRZ.

The letters BRZ stand for Boxer engine, Rear-wheel drive and Zenith - which confirms serveral facts. Firstly that, just like the Toyota FT-86, it will be rear-wheel drive not four-wheel drive and secondly it will feature a Boxer engine under the bonnet.

There are no precise engine details at the moment, but it's expected to use the same 200bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant as the Toyota FT-86, which shoud mean a 0-62mph time of around seven seconds and a top speed of 140mph. Higher performance versions are expected further down the line.

The technology concept in Frankfurt will be called the Subaru BRZ Prologue - Boxer Sports Car Architecture II. The II refers to the fact that a wire frame model and the image shown here were already revealed at the Geneva show earlier this year.

Subaru claims production is sheduled to begin in Spring 2012, just a few months after its Toyota stablemate is slated to hit showrooms.
