AWD to FWD...possible to change over
This has probably been answered before but can't seem to find it with the search function....
Is it possible to switch an AWD 92 to a FWD (like the 94/95 option)? Remove the rear drive shafts, diff, etc.? Would it be possible to get the same weight off as with the 94/95 (approx. 300lbs)? Just wondering.....

so you want to lose "The Beauty of All Wheel Drive!?!." If all you removed were the AWD mechanicals, the differance in weight would be about 95#s The axles are only 12.15#s each, The driveshaft is just about 20#s flat, The stock rear diff goes 55#s. Thats 99.3#s, and then you would save maybe 10#s by taking off the tailshaft and rear clutch. But now you have to install the axle stubs adding some back! So you lost about $1000.00 in value from a unique and classic car that will not be one half as good in the snow or rain, and YOU LIVE IN MAINE!?!?

Re: AWD to FWD...possible to change over
Don't get me wrong, weight savings is great.
I took my Claret from 3580 down to 3315 and still had leather, AWD, bigger brakes, bigger wheels and tires, bigger exhaust system etc! If you go to a non-powered drivers seat you can loose 35#s, a fiberglass hood saves 28.5#s. You can easily loose 16 or more #s with lighter wheels! Heck there is an easy 2#s in the glove box door! How about empty the trunk? No spare tire, jack, tools.

Re: AWD to FWD...possible to change over
I've probably shaved 50 lbs off my car with a custom exhaust (lose the boat anchor main cat), and ditching the A/C.

Re: AWD to FWD...possible to change over
Ha ha...I figured I'd get some good responses! I know the 94/95 FWD cars get much better mpg. Much of that must be due to the decreased drag from the rear diff, etc.
svxfiles...you really got your weight down to 3315lbs?! This makes me wonder how light you could get a 94/95 FWD! Obviously would be nice to have two cars... Another stupid question: Has anyone ever put a MT (5, or 6spd) on a FWD SVX?
