Brake leak found
Well, my brake light has been coming on more often now, and I need to fill the reservoir more often than I feel comfortable with. I hadn't noticed any fluid anywhere before (probably because the leak was so gradual) but it's starting to accumulate. This is what's leaking:
It is just in front of the passenger rear wheel. The inside lines under the back seat are dry as a bone. There is no fluid on the calipers or the lines connecting to them, and the lines look fairly new too. I will be taking it somewhere this week. Even though I'm pretty mechanical and good at fixing things, I don't want to mess with my brakes. Is this going to be an expensive repair? :[

Re: Brake leak found
To do it correctly, yes, unfortunately. The correct way to replace that line is to drop the fuel tank (which means rear diff, exhaust, driveshaft, etc) and either replace at the closest fitting or cut/flare and start a new line. Not a cheap repair.
Now, that being said, I believe my car once suffered a similar failure and was repaired without dropping the tank. It looks like someone fed the line through however they could and just bent it into place. It isn't pretty and I don't like it much, but my brakes have worked perfectly for the 5 years I've owned the car.

Re: Brake leak found
I just had the entire rear end disassembled about a year ago to replace my fuel lines... I really don't want to do that again. The place I take her to is very honest, and they would have noticed if the piping that's hidden was bad and they would have replaced it. Could I just replace the broken part and rig it? It doesn't have to look perfect.. I just want my brakes to work... Do you have any pictures of it?

Re: Brake leak found
The labor should be about the same as what they charged for fuel lines.

Re: Brake leak found
That was a 6 hour job. Hopefully when I call them tomorrow they'll know of an easier fix...
What will happen if this thing breaks all the way? Will I lose my back brakes or all my brakes?

Re: Brake leak found
Broken brake lines are a severe safety risk. Modern cars are set up with the LF and RR on one circuit, and the RF and LR on a separate one to avoid complete loss of brakes in the case of a line failure. Still, not something I'd want to go through.
I won't be near my car again until Friday night. I can take some pictures of my setup and post them for you then.

Re: Brake leak found
Not that I would recommend driving with them in that condition...
But if I did, next time I was out, I would be checking the effectiveness of my hand brake and always leave extra room in front of me.
