Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

In the journey to cure the shuddering problem in my daily drive SVX, I jacked up rear of my parts car (from where the daily driver's transmission was sourced) and confirmed suspicions that it has a 4.44:1 diff.

Hatched a plan to put the parts diff into the daily driver, first step of removing the parts diff was completed A-OK.

Are you saying that you have missmatched front and rear gear ratios?

Speaking of shuddering, remind me to have you check out the front shafts. I get intermittent shuddering. It is pretty tame but annoying.

I sent you an email about tomorrow.

I'm a little confused by 4.41. I assume you mean either 4.44 or 4.11. But as long as your problem is solved, that's good.

I'm just surprised that you can drive around with a mismatch diff and not break anything.

I would be worried about damage to the center diff. But if all seems well then maybe it's fine. Probably depends on how long it was driven for and how far and fast.

I blew a center diff in a 5MT in about 4 miles when the wrong reduction gear was put in the transfer case. That was the dealership's fault thankfully, but it doesn't take long.

Handed mine over to OT so he could play with my crank.......seal along with the cam seals, timing belt, pullies, water pump, plugs and front struts.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Got rear ended.

Driving along a state highway, wifey asked "why is that guy reversing up alongside the road" about 500m away.

That seems odd, as we got closer we could see he was reversing a trailer.
Closer still, his trailer had dumped something in the middle of the road and the oncoming traffic was driving around it onto our side of the road (what we call a state highway here can mean a two lane road, one lane in each direction and no barriers separating opposing traffic).

So I stopped, (gently, not locking up the brakes or anything silly) and eyeballed the situation to see if we should simply wait for traffic to clear or get out and help.

I heard screeching tyres behind me, looked back to see a cloud of tyre smoke, guessed the person behind me was trying (badly) to stop in a hurry, so I gave my car some gas to move forward, hoping they would stop short of me.

Not enough room, they still managed to hit me.

Very minor damage to the rear bumper, nothing else. A bit frustrating as the whole car has just been panelled and painted.
Just glad I saw what was happening so I could open up the gap, otherwise the damage would have been much worse.

Funny thing is, the driver of the car behind me told me several times that it was my fault because I didn't have a good reason to stop (apparently a trailer load spilled into the road isn't sufficient reason to stop).

Never mind, I have full cover insurance and she's a clown.

More amusing she has probably put four flat spots on her tyres from the 50m long lock up (I measured it), so now she will here the constant sound of the flat spots on her tyres to remind her to pay attention to the traffic in front and not gaze off into the wilderness.

Back to the panel shop.

Shane - what a bummer, especially after all the work you have done recently - hope you have the car back on the road quickly.

Glad no one was hurt, even the SVX itself. It would have been a real bummer if the car was totaled.
