There is little to no documentation of his efforts here on the forums also, so the best way to start would be to talk to him directly. So, yes, it could be done, I am sure. But I'm also pretty sure no one will be willing/able to attempt it. Here are some older threads where this was discussed: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38134 http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=16087 http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55100 http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=40305

Re: 4eat technical questions
Having dug around, i found my answer. I appreciate opinions as much as the next guy, and i'll usually respect them. Im looking to make a product that will sell to a wide market. Not just the SVX, and not just Subies. Most new auto transmissions could be piggybacked the way im thinking. In fact, the abundance of tiptronic style sport shifters says all i cant.
While paddleshift may not be your cup of tea, im sure i can sell a boatload of kits to those who do like the idea. The fact that im going to develop the hardware, and software on my SVX doesnt mean my kit will be aimed at only this market.

Re: 4eat technical questions
I developed a paddleshift SVX TCU for a member here. It's fairly easy to do and it works quite well. I ran it in my car for about 6 months. It's basically a matter of chipping the TCU then running a couple of wires from it to your paddleshift switches.
Once the owner has a chance to install it in their car and show it off, I'll be happy to repeat the process for other people. Personally I'd rather optimise the shift maps and then let the computer handle the shifting.

Re: 4eat technical questions
Thanks b3lha. Im looking for a reversible plug n play setup. Something that with a harness swap can be used on many different vehicles.

Thats why im looking to piggyback shift controls with a small plc. Chipping a tcu isnt within everyones skill set. Tho if you are going to be selling chipped tcu's i wont step on your toes.

Re: 4eat technical questions
I have also had success doing a 4eat Phase II Version II swap using the transmission out of a 2003 Impreza WRX along with the TCM and part of the harness from the same car. This is a good swap because the transmission can take more power, is direct controlled so easier to tune, and best of all has the VTD planetary center diff.
I see no reason that the 5eat couldn't be swapped in as long as you got a TCM from a 5eat car and enough of the harness to rig it up. You also obviously have to match the rear diff ratio to that of the front diff inside the transmission. I didn't do the 5eat purely because I am cheap and the 4eat from the wrx cost me nothing. |

Re: 4eat technical questions
That would make a good step by step write up in the how to do area

Re: 4eat technical questions
I agree that a write up on that swap would be very helpful.

Re: 4eat technical questions
I also picked up 4 wrx steering wheels with paddle shifters I don't like air bags if you wire the paddles up to the airbag slip ring it will make them work at the wheel then. will have to hook them up to the tcu.

Re: 4eat technical questions
To revive this thread, what would be involved in installing the paddles from an Ebay listing; https://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-Subaru-...97.m4902.l9144 or doing a steering wheel swap; https://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-16-Sub...97.m4902.l9144

Re: 4eat technical questions
I will see about grabbing some pics. Sadly life has thrown a lot of projects at me all at once so it will probably be until the end of the month before I get them put up on here.
The best part is though the drive shaft doesn't need shortened and no custom mounts or anything had to be made. Mechanically it bolts right up. |
