Surely the easiest and FREE way to make sure your oil is not low or empty is to use the dipstick...it's worked for over 100 years.

yes, valuable lesson learned.
Learned another valuable lesson last week, don't tow a nearly 2 tonne car with your ute in 5th gear.
It will break the gearbox.

It's been an expensive week.

Should use a station wagon instead, or a minivan with a glass transmission. Works plenty well for me

Nate's comment, not mine. Nate hauled a few SVXes around the country with a dodge caravan, packed full of engines, transmissions, etc, etc. Poor caravan. Those transmissions are supposed to be pretty weak.
