Play in front diff bearings
How much play is acceptible in the front diff output bearings? My car started making a thumping/vibration somewhere in the front. I haven't been able to nail down the source yet (car is on the lift right now), but I did notice there's a fair amount of play where the axles come into the front diff.
Also, can those bearings be changed with the tranny in the car? Subaruparts.com lists them at $55-ish each, plus seals, etc. But if the whole tranny has to come out...Might just start working toward the MT swap.

Its not the bearings. The stubs in the trans simply slip in and clip into the spider gears. The slop is in the pin and yes it is normal

Okay, thanks Tom. I figured it wasn't a bad thing, as most bearings I've seen with significant play in them are also very crunchy. Turns out the thumping I was hearing was a loose wheel. When I put my winters on last week some rust flakes fell between the wheel and rotor. I guess these compressed/fell out over the week and allowed the lug nuts to loosen up. All 4 have been cleaned.hand torqued.
