Tranny swap

I am new to this idea, but my 92 LSL just lost second gear. I am at a crossroads I can either repair, replace, or swap. is there an affordable, but performance friendly swap that can be done? The way I see it if I rebuild , I take chances on having the tranny take a crap on me again. If I replace with the same, I inherit new problems. If I swap to manual, I want a good performance tranny (6 speed). Which is my best option?

The cheapest and easiest tranny upgrade is a 4.44 Outback Tranny and rear diff.

They'll handle the power better, and get the power to the ground better.

And is almost a bolt in deal (just have to swap the rear diff ring and pinion)

Actually the 2002 WRX 5-speed will bolt up to the EG33 in the SVX, but does required some custom fabrication to make it work (see my write up in my Sig)

As for the Outback auto 4.44 Tranny
Any Legacy Outback or Legacy GT from 1996-1998 (but some of the 98's won't work, you can tell if they have a spin on filter on the side of the tranny case, it won't work)

I would familiarize yourself with the search engine theres tons of info on 4.44.

96-early 98 will work. the 5 speed will work too but that needs more fabrication.

...or a 5 speed with the r/a gearset. The close ratio 6 speed is a little overkill for the eg33's torque curve (Though that is mostly a matter of opinion)

Just out of curiousity, what's the latest year 5 or 6MT that can be swapped? The only reason I ask is there's a brand new 2006 STi 6MT (With rear diff, driveshaft, axles, starter, x-member) on Ebay right now currently at $455. Is that do-able?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Brand...QQcmdZViewItem

Edit: It's not at $455 anymore. Big surprise there.

Will the Impreza 2.5 RS 98-03 tranny fit? I am having a hard time finding a suitable tranny. The 2.5RS has a 4EAT with a 4.44 LSD.any $eat should fit right?

NO

It has to be a pre 98 4EAT, mid year in 98 they changed the 4EAT, and the newer ones won't work with the SVX TCU (Transmission Control Unit)

you can tell a new version by the external "screw on" filter (looks like an oil filter) on the drivers side of the tranny.....if it has this filter, you CAN NOT use it....

so it needs to come out of a "Legacy GT", or "Legacy Outback" 95-98 to get a 4EAT with 4.44's that will work with the SVX
