Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
after a long search..(maybe 3 minutes) I've grown tired of beating around the subject.
I am replacing the water pump (and after looking at the timing belt), Timing belt and thermostat, (maybe the idler pulleys too...but we'll see about those) First hurdle is the crank pulley... and a question... does the breaker bar wedged on the floor and cranking the engine with the Igniter disengaged work? I've removed the radiator, carbon canister... removed the outside covers... I'll start doing a short video AFTER I get the crank pulley off... (if I can) Please...feel free to post... swear...laugh... whatever... (ps...I know I haven't been around for a while.... it's my damn scooter ya see..... I've had the SVX parked almost a year except for the short drive to my mom's garage... I'll post more....I promise... ) ![]()

Removing the radiator makes the job a lot easier. It might be a good idea to get new rad hoses as well if yours are old.

Re: Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
Ok...the good.
After talking to Tom (SVXfiles) and discussing the pros and cons of wedging a breaker bar against the ground and using the starting motor for torque .... and risking #1 broken teeth on the startermotor gear, #2 broken teeth on the torque converter #3 the risk of wrenches.. bars and sockets flying all over the back yard... I went with his method. Using a hardened impact 7/8 inch socket on my breaker bar and wacking the hell out of it with a 4lb mallet ... The pulley nut was loose after about 30 blows... and more than a little frustration ![]() Upon removing the Crank Pulley and the center cover my suspicion of a seized water pump was confirmed.. which is a good thing actually...my imagination had started to run away with itself on possible other reasons for the overheating.. i.e. bad head gasket... As I was attempting to remove the waterpump.. I noticed that the rear timing belt cover sort of covers the removal of the water pump... The only way I can see around breaking it is to remove the Left Side Cam Gear... Any other solutions out there? a couple of pictures on my Iphone not down loaded yet...

Re: Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
Added information...All of the idler pulleys are in GREAT shape. No noise and rotate nice and firmly with no play....

![]() You have not taken out ALL SEVEN (7) bolts that hold the water pump to the the engine AND the rear timing belt cover.

Re: Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
Did very little today... cleaned the gunk off the power steering pump and put the new o ring on... put the waterpump back on and the rear cover and cam gear...
but here is an interesting find... I found online (while I was looking at the torque specs for the waterpump) I'm not sure how ethical this is..but I found it... 1992 Subaru SVX service manual in PDF form... I downloaded them all and put them on a DVD. here's the link.. follow it at your own risk. http://phantomotaku.com/SVX/ The root URL is An Anime Community but type /svx at the back...and you get the PDFs.... again...not sure of the legality...so you go there at your own risk.

Re: Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
ok.... the water pump is in...the timing belt is on... correctly, alternator back on. steering pump back on (with new o ring). bolts torqued to spec...radiator filled tranny cooler hooked back up.. and car started.... sounds better than it has for a long time. still on the blocks ...going to flush cooling system, change oil and check tranny fluid...
and.... this is a bit surprising... no CEL ....... (THAT has me a bit concerned) It came on and stayed the first two times I started it...but then unlike before...it stayed off...even after I let the engine cool down.... I started it about 20 times...and no CEL.... I hadn't checked the codes..but was almost positive it was going to be the o2 sensor... Now.... any Ideas? today's pics....

Re: Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
Perhaps your timing was off (belt jumped 1 or more teeth)

If I had been half smart instead of half fast (say it out loud) I would have checked that before I removed the belt...
Oh well.... next time... ![]()

Re: Waterpump, Timing belt, replace
I noticed that I didn't say how I secured the crankshaft when I re-tightened the crank pulley nut.... When I was changing the magneto on my scooter I made a tool for holding the pulley... figured it would work on this too..... I was right...
Here's a picture of the tool.
