Crank Pulley Wrench

Does anyone in Philly / NJ area have the crank pulley tool #499977000? Can I borrow/rent?

Does anyone anywhere know a generic substitute or or trick for getting the center bolt undone WITH ENGINE IN CAR i.e., I can not get a straight shot at it with an impact wrench.

I have had luck using a chain wrench around the crank pulley and a very large ratchet on the bolt. I saw this done at the dealership and have used it many times on Subaru's I've owned to get at the timing belt, oil pump, etc.
Be carefull not to foul the grooves in the crank pulley with too much force or a crooked pull.
Good luck.

For the fearless, get a 25" breaker bar (HarborFreight), 1/2" drive, put the appropriate crank bolt socket on it, attach to bolt with end of bar dropping down towards pavement( splash shield off) to the right side (facing motor, driver's side of motor), and have helper turn key to start momentarily so engine cranks briefly. Remind helper to turn off key right away . I usually steady the breaker bar with a towel, holding it firm to bolt and ground. This will "break" the bolt loose. As I remember though, if you take off the radiator, you can reach the bolt with an impact wrench as long as you have long enough extensions to poke through the appropriate slot in the front grill area.

I have used the cruder method on many cars, including a 20V Audi which specifys 368 ft/lbs torque to tighten the pulley bolt. As long as care is taken to align/fit the breaker perpendicular to the bolt, things go well. Try and find a concrete pavement for this trick..I've had the bar dig a small ditch through asphalt !!

I did some what the same thing however I braced the bar on the drivers side frame rail. I suggest you do this with NOONE standing near the front/side of the car. Just a couple of quick shots on the starter key should do the trick. Definatally remove radiator to keep from damaging that. It's a little unethical but it works.

the tool is $155. Personally i decided it was worth it so i didn't have to worry about screwing anything up. The parts department at the dealer won't have it. What they have to do is go to the service manager. The service manager can order it.
