Street Performance (500 Hp ?!?)
I am finishing-up the planning stages for a project car - 1996 Subaru SVX. I have four goals: Aesthetics, Luxury, Performance and Sound (A.L.P.S.). I wanted to tap the forum for some Performance ideas... shooting for 500 HP (if possible... is it possible, what do you think?).
So, from ignition to exhaust, springs to brakes, chips to transmission, turbo to nitrous, what would be the ultimate in Street Performance? Basically, the RX-7, Supra, 3000 GT and 300 ZX have had their day. It's time for the SVX to compete! |

Anything can be done. It's the matter of how big your wallet is and how much you want to change the car.

* ...free your mind... *
"Anything is possible." Well that narrows it down... ; )
Assume a fat wallet and keep in mind the project is shooting for Street Performance... Here's a start: Hi Flow Air Intake (+8hp) Motorsport's Custom Exhaust (+?hp) Venom Peformance Venom 400 (+60hp) Venom Perfromance VCN-2000 (+200hp) Unorthodox Underdrive Crank Pulley (+6hp) ForcedAirTech Turbo Kit (+80hp) = 584 HP + This is obviously only a start, and depends too much on nitrous. What modifications would you make? Can you bore and stroke the engine? What displacement can be achieved? Is there a better turbo kit on the market (what about a custom turbo by turboneticsinc.com)? What aftermarket parts would you add (vendor and parts)? |

I don't (personally) think that 500 HP is achievable, but, best of luck to you.

500 hp is acheivable in a svx,, if u have the money time and patients for it,, but why ???
500 hp still wont make that beast of avsx run 12s or even 13s,, the driveline would snap.. not to mention the amount of money and time doing a 5 speed swap and rebuilding the 5 speed to handle 500 hp.. no to mention motor mounts busting..drive axles..overheating..ecu problems, etc etc etc,, but good luck on hiting 500 hp hope u do ...so i have some braging rights on a svx,

I'll be working inside out (Interior, Exterior, then Performance and Sound) so it will be sometime before the Performance mods come, but I wanted to get the forum thinking in that direction. I've seen (heavily modified) Street RX-7s boasting 750hp+. It's a great car, but so is the SVX.
In the end, I expect to be shipping the car to a shop to do the mods. This wont be a do-it-yourself job. Maybe it will happen, maybe it wont. Maybe it can't. Maybe the cost would be too restrictive. But if it is possible, what would have to be done? |

P.S. The only thing standing in the way would be the Wife. She's in to tuning the car, but... Money would not be the issue.

you're going to need a tranny and upgraded brakes to handle that power. you're looking at maybe $10,000 just for these alone, before you get into any power mods. i'm no expert, but i'd think you'd need some forged lower compression pistons, too, if you were doing any kind of forced induction. the SVX is a HEAVY car, you could strip out some non-essentials to lose weight, but there goes your luxury. i think everyone here would love a 500hp SVX, but the costs involved and the limited aftermarket parts available just make the cost way too high to justify it, especially since you won't be doing the work yourself. don't forget that most of the money that is put into this project would be a loss if you went to sell the car. if its your dream, though, good luck and keep us posted as to the progress.

500 HP is achievable with money, but the main issue will be drivetrain. It will cost much more in custom suspension and drivetrain components than the engine will cost. I say go for it if you have the money. If I won the lottery, I'd take a dozen SVXs to the top dozen performance shops and tell them, "Whoever gets it to do a 9 sec 1/4 mile and braking to match without sacrificing its touring quality, gets a million dollars." you would have to mod the hood a well, I would think so that you could fit the parts in there. But like everyone said, the current drivetrain can't really handle the stock power, you would have to definatly upgrade that.

Go for 400
400 is a lot more achievable. A sportsman's fogger dialed up to 150hp and all the other nickel and dime bolt on goodies could get you close to 400. Check into an aquamist system. May or may not need to rework the bottom end, at least to start. To get to 500 you would be looking at twin intercooled turbo$ and everything that goes along with that. Realistically though, just buy a small block V-8 crate motor and tranny to match, and make that work. But then it wouldn't really be an SVX. Good luck and let me know if you need a spare motor.
