Final Cut Pro X
I know this is about as far off topic as one can get on this forum, but considering the broad cross-section of folks here I'm interested to hear about this from people outside of my business. For the past two weeks my industry was turned quite upside down by Apple's release of Final Cut Pro X. I just finished up my day having a very frank discussion with the owner of a company who'd invested heavily in Apple infrastructure in the past few years (much on my recommendation) now seeing it as obsolete equipment. I suggested that he move on to Adobe to save on replacement hardware, instead of going back to Avid which is what he built his company on but would cost exponentially more to switch back to. Needless to say he's pissed, and I feel like I hitched my wagon to the wrong pony. Here's the rub: FCPX is great! Just not for us.
FCPX looks like the best way to create content for the web without the constraints of narrative or broadcast production. This is the greatest system to shoot a video of your SVX, cut it to some good music, and post it to YouTube I've ever seen. There's a huge market for that, and I love watching SVX videos online so I want it to thrive. BBC just can't use it for Top Gear any more than I can for toy commercials. So how has this affected the SVX community? Has anyone else here tried it? What do you use to process video (for those of you who do)? Everybody in post production is saying that this app was made for a broad consumer market of "filmmakers hobbyists". Is that you? Does that market exist? Am I the only SVX owner who gives a darn? ![]()
