Stage III wheels
Ok, I have been debating this for awhile now. I have to the conclusion that I just don't know whats best for me, as usual, so I would ask here. Would I be better off going with a 16x8 or a 17x8 wheel. I am not just a straight line enthusiast, I like to go around the track so please keep that into consideration. It might also be good to note that I would like to do SOMETHING with my brakes...upgraded rotors and pads is not enough. So if that means going with a 17x8 then so be it, but will one size up even matter? Or would I have to go with an 18x8 to make a big enough difference clearance wise? I am not willing to make the jump to 18's most likely.
Here is what I want in a wheel: 1. Lightweight (tied for most important) 2. Strength (tied for most important...although I can afford to make the initial investment into a good wheel...I cant replace them more than every 2 years) 3. Looks 4. Reasonable price tag...I define that as below 5k for a set of four. Knowing if I should be looking at either a 16 or 17 would be the best start (or even finding out I could fit a 16/17x8.5/9 without rubbing would be even better). Keep in mind my car will be lowered an inch or so. So...what do you guys direct me to do? |

I didn't know wheels came in stages
Get some 16" rx-7 wheels. Inexpensive, light, and look nice.

I disagree with you when it comes to the looks department, and they could be lighter for being a 16. Not to mention in some cases have some integrity issues.

Duckie,
Many questions there all rolled up in one. IMO you shouldn't buy anything until you nail down the BigBrake upgrade you're planning to do, contact them about clearance issues and go from there. Do a search in the mod forum about wheel sizes & fit and you can read for days. Personally I'm a sucker for 7 spoke wheels and the ProDrive PF7 (16 & 17") and the GORGEOUS PFF7 18" Flowform forged, lightweight and strong, would be the setup. Variety of finishes including these on a Euro member's car; http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...cket/32831.jpg But as far as rims and tires go it's a lot of $$ to spend only to find it won't work with future upgrades. I suppose I didnt really phrase my question in the best manor. I don't know where to go as far as a substantial brake upgrade. I have looked around and can't really decide on which direction to go in. I know most of the options but when it comes to a technical standpoint I dont really have the knowledge to really know the interacacies (ignore my horrible spelling please) between my different options. Also, as far as the wheel fitment issue, believe me I am well read (when it comes to this forum) and try and read every thread out there. I am sure I have missed a few but I don't recall seeing anything past 8 wide fitting and I am asking someone to show me otherwise (because that would be wonderful).
In summary I know dick about cars other than the fact that I can drive them fairly well. I also know this, I love cars in all shapes and sizes (except SUVs =/) and one does not need technical knowledge to do so. However, because of the level of my knowledge, or lack there of, I call upon you people to guide me into making a proper decision. |

Hmm...For a while I was looking into Sparco Racing NT-R rims. 17 by 7.5 was thewidest 17 incher that ive found thus far, so if your looking for 8 you might be beat. Not too bad though, they weigh in at just about 16 pounds for 17' and although they dont look like it, Im sure they are fairly strong
Here in bronze Oh...and a 17 inch rim is that little step up that you would need for upgraded brakes. Talk to svxfiles about his brake kit. If you want to go with not only larger rotors but bigger, redder, more expensive calipers too, do a search for the Wilwood brake kit

Take a look at RAYS Wheels. You really can't go wrong. Volk Racing, Gram Lights, and Yokohama/Advan are all excellent choices. Plenty of sizes, light weight, and look great.
