piercing in the work place

So i have been appling for jobs like crazy recently... I have my eyebrow and lip pierced and 4 guages in my ears... so i have been through some interviews and suprisingly only one place had an objection to my piercings... but that company didnt even allow ears to be pierced! their justifcation is that it makes the custumers uncomfertable... I have no problem taking piercings out but it got me to thinking about the argument of some custumers might be uncomfrtable with some one other then a white person working on their car... do you only hire white people then? Where it the line drawn? do i have a valid argument at all?

Our company was very strict on that but since they go through so many employees and are running out of people to hire they don't enforce very much anymore.

Used to be Business Casual all the time, now only when clients come to visit.

No non-natural coloured hair or body mods.

Logos on clothing could be no larger than a credit card.

All that has changed now.

I dont see any problem with peircings and body art, but if your working in a shop environment, there could be justification for not allowing piercings. It could be a saftey hazard. Not a really big one I guess, but if something got caught on a peircing and ripped it out, Im sure that would ruin your day among other things

you know alot of people say that but i mean i think my fingers are more of a safety hazard.... as far as it goes i can't see them getting caught usless i was sticking them in places they shouldnt be... usually i dont get my face any where near moving parts... its just a rule i have...

we used to have really tight appearance standards. men's hair had to be shorter than collar-length and no beards or goattees allowed; just mustaches. these were eventually dropped, but men cannot grow facial hair on the job; it has to be done on vacation. also, now we can have earrings, but only one per ear. women are allowed two per ear. our new rule is all tattoos bust be covered. we've never addressed piercings, but i assume they follow the same rules as tats.

The biggest flaw to your arguement is that you would be hard pressed to convince someone that you were born with rings of metal on your face. Those who have body modifications should be willing to take all consequences of their actions. If you have holes your ear, or if you split your tongue, or you get something rediculous like this

you have to assume society is going to look at you as being different (and that's what you were going for in the first place is it not?). Why should society be accepting of you, when you made the conscious decision to seperate yourself from it?

I found this statement as profound. I never thought of it that way. He has a point.

Being 45 years old, and not even a tattoo, piercings do cause me to lose focus on the individual and focus on the accessory. I'm not thinking anything negative but my mind is now focused on "man, that must have hurt like he11." I don't believe you want an employer thinking of anything else but whether you are a fit in his organization, not on a piece of jewelry. Why would you want the discussion about you after you leave being focused on an accessory?

I have nothing against them, but it has to be a little obvious you are drawing attention away from yourself, when in actuality, you want the employer entirely focused on you. Take it all out, let the holes seal up. Thinking differently is a good thing, looking different only applies if you are good looking. Running around with ball bearings on your face isn't good looking.

Surprisingly I agree with both you and SubaSteevo which is probably a first or second. I am a bit older and do not have a tattoo or any type piercing. I always figured if I did something and need to hide, I damn sure did not want a tattoo to help identify me. And not that I am totally opposed to tasteful and strategically located tattoos. Both of my sons did have their ears pierced when they were young, but have not worn anything for years.

I have noted recent articles that say that piercings are actually on the decline indicating the gradual demise of a fad. However, it does seem that tattoos are the thing for athletes, particularly those in basketball.

I have always thought what a great handle the rings and studs would be in a close fight. Imagine how that would hurt if you yanked out 3 or 4 of them. I bet it would reduce him to a bubbling idiot. Probably more effective than a kick in the gonads.

The other day I hear that someone stole parts off of a motercycle. They then tried to sell them on ebay. That is when they had some problems.

When they took the pictures of the parts on their floor, they included their bare feet. They had a letter tatooed on each toe and the police recognized them and he was arrested very quickly there after.

The tatoos were as follows - One letter on each toe:

W H I T E on the left foot looking down

T R A S H on the right foot looking down.

Now, that shows his intelligence!!!!!!!

So that's where I went wrong in High School. Girls would call me up totally out of the blue. "Hello? Is this Robert? Good! I just called to say I wouldn't be caught dead out with you. Just making sure you never bother to ask. OK? You have a nice day, good bye." Girls would stop me in the hall and confirm messages they left me telling me to drop dead. On Valentines day, I would get restraining orders in pink envelopes from girls I've never met.

But what if I had a ball bearing protruding out of my cheek?

Sigh.... I guess hindsight is 20-20.

Why were you so quick to make a racial comment to try an equate it to possible issues regarding your own decision to be pierced? Employers should be allowed to hire people who represent the image they wish to provide to thier customers. Not merely on race as a well dressed black male is the same as a white male, but one with metal all over his face is not.
