1996 AWD SVX Dyno Numbers

Well, I must start this off by saying this was Chike's car that he sold me yesterday. I wanted to copy and paste the current mods (exhaust, cams, header, 4.44 gears) from what he may have posted up in another thread but I didn't see it in his link. Chike, chime in with info if you like.

Basically, I wanted to dyno the numbers to see where it stands now vs where it may/can be in the future. Dyno runs where done at Xotic motorsports in Cochranville, PA with a guy name Andy helping out. This is a Dynojet AWD dyno. Stock STi numbers are 245 -/+ 5hp from what Andy told me, 245-255 what he told Chike. Intake temps were checked with a laser temp probe and was about 77-79F (Plastic intake). Above the phenolic (sp?) spacers, the temp was 100-101F while below it was 122-124F.

I did a total of five dyno runs. The first run was what I thought was 2nd gear but it actually ended up being 1st gear. That run will not be posted. The 2nd and 3rd run was done from the bottom of 1st gear to the top of 3rd gear. The 4th and 5th runs were done the same except that the two intake tubes were removed (per Chike) to test to see how the Maf bypass effects hp/torque numbers. Here are a few pics of the car on the dyno.

Sorry for the pics that are not that clear.

Here is a video of the car on the dyno.
http://svx-iw.com/svxiw/videos/dyno/SVXDyno.MOV

Without delaying, here are the dyno charts.

1st-3rd gear, All four dyno runs

Notice that removing the two rubber hoses used for heating up the intake during started will net in 3-6hp. Sorry if the dyno image is a little to small. I had it larger but it stretched the screen. I'll fix it a little later.

1st-3rd gear, All four dyno runs, Only HP

1st-3rd gear, All four dyno runs, Only TQ

2nd Gear HP

2nd Gear TQ

I'd post more info but this opens everything up to some talk and debate. Plus, this is my only day off and I have an intake idea I mentioned to Chike. I have to stop by Vertex Industries to discuss piping sizes NOW. So, I'll be back to add later.

Oh yeah, this is in STD (Not sexually transmitted diseases ) format instead of SAE like I originally had the graph. SAE will make the numbers be about 5hp/5lbs-ft of torque lower across the board. It is in STD to compare apples to apples with Chike's previous numbers. Ok, I'm out for now.

Here's my dyno graph from when I dyno'd my former '96 (now owned by Myxalplyx) with the previous STD correction:

*Note*: SAE correction changed in '05 resulting in lower hp ratings. I dyno'd my car under the old correction factors, and Myxalplyx has shown his dyno results using the same standard. My pulls were done in 2nd gear on a dynojet and his comparative pulls were done in 2nd gear on a similar dynojet.

Chike,

I have that movie of the last dyno run but I am out of space on my server. You know where I can host it up? I need to run out now before the sun goes down. I'll be back in a bit.

Earthworm should be able to host it on his site.

Kevin,

PM Earthworm. He hosts SVX videos on his site: www.svx-iw.com

P.S. For those wondering, here's a pic showing the hoses to disconnect after the car is warm. Doing this will allow for a rudimentary MAF bypass mod. However, if you do this understand that unfiltered debris can get into your engine, so using a some sort filtering screen/mesh will keep large particles out.

P.P.S. I should give credit to Mychailo for the rudimentary throttle bypass mod.

Okay guys, look at the last two graphs that Kevin posted for whp & wtq in 2nd gear:

These show hp & tq in 2nd gear. With the rudimentary MAF bypass, he saw 175.03whp & 174.35 wtq, where my best numbers before were 165.1 whp & 173.4 wtq.

Remember, this is an OBDII '96 so there's no Z32 MAF and Stage 2v5 software available yet from ECUTune. As a result, when peak power is made around 5,800rpms the power curve takes a dip and levels off. Previously, when I dyno'd this car and she didn't have the cams or my other mods, that dip didn't happen until 6,500+ rpms.

With the Stage 2 software, I'm sure more peak power could be made when the maxed out MAF isn't an issue. The afr with the intake hose off is in the low 12.0:1 range which isn't bad, so the issue isn't fuel.

I'm not going anywhere - in 3-4 years time I could see myself either buying back this car from Kevin or finding another one and modding it again.

I'm just happy to see Kevin (Myxalplyx) continuing along the same path I was.

Btw, the 175 whp (using the standard 30% drivetrain loss for an awd automatic) equates to an estimated crank hp of exactly 250hp! Again, this figure could be even higher once LAN releases the necessary MAF and software upgrades for OBDII owners.

Kevin should definitely take his '96 to 14 seconds in the 1/4 mile on the motor alone.

For comparison, at Altered Atmosphere's Dynojet, a stock STI also puts down 245 +/- 5hp as well.

Beautiful. I wish more people put up a thorough set of dyno charts like these, with different gear pulls, and charts vs. rpm AND vs. speed.

Congrats on the great catch! Definitely looks like a blast to drive.

Agreed. We definitely need more members who are willing to invest in dynoing and tuning these cars! That's why I refused to trade mine in and waited until a buyer such as Kevin came along...

I miss that car so much already. My wife said I cried more over selling that car, than I did when my son was born...

Just want to mention that this is only worthwhile if something has been done to richen the afr. In Chike's case, he had installed an Impreza RS fpr.

Hey Chike, Kevin,

It looks like peak HP with the cams is at about the same rpm as the stock cams. Is that how it looks/feels to you also?

Thanks! The video has been uploaded.

Also, I do not know how this may help with the breakdown of hp and such but this is a graph I made up with Speed vs Time. It is the time each run took to get to the top of 3rd gear vs the hp it was making during this time.
