Voltage doubler?
Does anyone know where I might be able to find such a beast? I'd found an old fire allarm bell that I want to use as a horn on my truck, but 12 volts is half of what it needs to make serious noise

Depends on the amount of current needed for the horn. 24 volts can be made with two batteries in series - but you'd have to get a 2nd battery. But if there's just a little bit of current then you can get away with an IC step up (boost) converter.
Other wise - time for a SMPS (switch mode power supply). Do a  for DC-Dc converters. They can get expensive

Ooh! Ooh! I know!
Just run two sets of wires to it. Stepping up DC current is pretty big hassle. I wonder what sort of voltage your bell operates on internally. I've only seen 120 VAC fire bells that ring at 60 cycles. Unless it's got some sort of mechanical crank to whack the bell, there must be some circuitry to turn the 24 VDC into some sort of AC. Many fire alarm and suppression systems are 24 volt, but I've seen 12 volt outputs, 12 volt devices, and 12 volt devices modified to operate on 24 volts. (All were bizarre set ups.) My familiarity with those systems is pretty limited, but I wouldn't be surprised if you took it apart and found something that could easily be rewired. I would imagine that the bell sucks quite a bit of juice, but so do laptop computers, and you can buy power supplies for them that run on 12 volts.

Thanks all, hmmmmm, don't think I can run to batteries in paralell and in series at the same time :O so I was trying to keep it simple, coming up with a couple ideas, may not be able to do it off the stock truck electrical system, duknow. It does work on 12 volts DC, but it is so quiet that anyone more than 20 feet away would burn to death before they heard the bell...
