Build a Subaru Select Monitor!

Found a link to this site on www.UKLegacy.com

http://kaele.com/~kashima/car/gc8-e.html

It appears to show a simple circuit which will allow you to connect the Subaru Select Monitor plug to a PC serial port (RS232C). Then, with the right software (which you have to write yourself), you can read and write directly to the ECU's RAM.

I've been looking to do a project like this for awhile. Very cool stuff. Has anyone done any homebrew stuff for this application yet?

First person to write an open-source application for this gets a cookie, and a special place in all our hearts!

Thats not me

It is Cat from the popular UK TV Series Red Dwarf

You... errr... don't actually want to know why he looks like that in the pic. Suffice to say, it is one of the episodes in season two, and people 'in the know' should recognise it as one of the most memorable moments in the show

Seriously, set up a PayPal donation section on the site where we download (or in the program) and if I like it, I'll pay.

Open source is probably better though, because people out there will end up adding bits and peices, writing up pretty interfaces, etc.

I'll bet if you set up a forum to ask people what they want, choose a nice prog language and talk to Ensteele or Chris - and chat to SVX-IW. They may be able to accomodate a feedback forum. I think we could seriously get something impressive on the rails here, not many people would have software written by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.

Hosting *may* be able to be organised by myself, although SVX-IW would probably be a better place.

All you software people out there - this would be a great way to contribute to the community. If you intend on tackling this project, get your heads together and see if you can make it a team effort.

If no-one will take it, Maxi will get AAAAAALL the credit!

O I would deff keep it open source, but open source doesn't always mean free. I'm not being greedy or anything just trying to pick up some beer money cause Im a broke college student ( 3rd year CS major at RIT)

EDIT- anyone wanna go in on this with me?? I dunno what kinda experience people out there have. Also any recomendations on the language to tackle this in? I was thinking c++ might be doable

Dumbass question:

Most 'puters don't have RS232ports anymore.

Any other way to get this baby hooked up? Serial or LPT maybe? Anything that will be a standard socket on most motherboards, that is...

Edit => Maybe Seraph would be interested?

I have my dive computers I download via RS232, took awile to find a USB to RS232 that worked for data biderectional transfer.. RatShack has one that works with any RS232 device.

I have no idea which season is which, but I think that's from the backwards episode. I believe the line was, "Don't ask."

How does a USB to Serial Converter work? Does it properly emulate serial ports to the extent that you can program the UARTs directly?

This is a rather strange baud rate. I know that the Linux serial driver can be set to custom baud rates. I don't know about the Windows driver.
