News from the Admin staff

There will be a VERY BRIEF outage on Sunday (January 13th) for some server work. If all goes well, the new system will go online and live next weekend (19th or 20th).

Well, we just survived our second attack on the server. This one happened while Jim (our security admin) was onsite doing work preparing for the new array to come online. Some low life scum was bored and tried to open as many connections as he could to crash or DOS attack the server. Jim found this immediately and was able to give the low-life the big middle finger. Besides being our security admin here on the back end staff, he is also the systems engineer for our upstream provider, Fiberpipe. So, he logged into routers at work and blocked access to his entire subnet. What a loooooooooooser!

If anyone is interested, the attack came from Australia. Good news is that I log all IP addresses and I am happy to say that we do not need to make any weird exception rules for our Australian friends/users.

Ohhhhhhh... those make me mad!!! If you have his/her ip, I'd talk to his/her ISP and shut him down. I remember doing that a while back and ISPs don't tolerate those actions taken by their users normally. I am sure Jim already know what to do.

This DOES NOT mean the server will be down for the week. Just a few minutes to do some card swapping and blow the dust bunnies out of the cooling fans. Just thought I would clarify

Now if I could only be 100 percent sure and had a physical address or location to point the finger. You could explain to them (the low life scum they are) that you dont like it when they mess with our server. Remind them what happened when Bin Laden started messing with us over here!

You could also explain to them that after they are run over a few dozen times, you could just pass off the mess as a road kill and donate the bloody carcass to Steve Irwin to feed to the crocs!

Probably some low life with more time than he/she knows what to do with.

I have the Alcyone rear light panel in hand and am ready to go - since they obviously know SVX's if they are attacking this site, then I will emboss it on their forehead for them

Hey, it's not that bad.... about 3 years ago, I had a server in the balkans that was hacked by 3 people on the same day. One from South Africa (routed through japan), one from Bosnia (I wonder why) and one by a 14 year old script kiddie from CA using AOHell. I don't think the script kiddie found it too funny when local police and the FBI came and knock on his door. AOL for once though was very cooperative when I called them in asking for the address of the person and after I forwarded the logs.

Anyways, as for Steve Irwin, did you guys see those girls that work at the bird area on Animal Planet? They were damn cute!
