In my quest to get better gas mileage I came across this site:
http://www.spiritofmaat.com/archive/feb2/carplans.htm The site has information on how to build a device to seperate water into H+H+O and then burn it in an engine. They claim it can be made by a DIYer. One draw back is the exhaust will have water in it. So the exhaust valves and cast iron ring piston rings and CI cyclinder liners will rust. So I am thinking about trying this with a combination of H2O and dino fuel so that it doesn't rust. I think I can build most of the component except for the electronic parts. Them I am not too sure about. Anybody know anything about this? Do you know anyone that has tried it? I was trying to find a forum on this subject but no luck so far. Let me know if you wnat to join in. I think my old Legacy will be the test vechicle.

Yes, I've heard of it. The guys at Los Alamos tried to build one in the 40's. Except it blew up.

I am concerned about the comments:
"the latent energy in the water is enough to power the engine and hence drive the alternator and whatever belt-driven accessories. And the alternator is efficient enough to run the various electrical loads (10 - 20 amps), including the additional low current to run this vapor reaction. No extra batteries are required." I'd like more educated people's opinion on this statement. I assume they are talking about a nice small 3 or 4 cylinder car, not a heavy sports car. Its a great idea for a new custom built engine, but not a retrofit. Doug

I'm just an ordinary product of the Georgia public school system, but I'm thoroughly confident in asserting that pigs will fly in formation before this particular device works as described. Hydrogen as an automotive fuel? Sure, someday. But not this way.
If you have the time, patience and resources to pursue this, I'll be delighted if you prove me wrong. dcb |

And think of this...once the hydrogen has been oxidised back into water you could pump that back up to the holding take to be re-used. Creating a closed system...perpetual motion....flying pigs, etc. I agree that its probably for smaller engines as is. I wonder what scaling it up to fit a larger engine might entail. But its nice to imagine a small group loyal to this rare, quirky car making a stamp in history by developing a usable version of this technology....Take that VTEC!

I designed something just like this in high school and showed it to my chemistry teacher.
![]() The thing is, it's unlikely that an alternator is going to provide you with enough electricity to crack water into hydrogen fast enough to fuel the car. You really need to do it outside the car. Another important point is that it's far less efficient to crack water into hydrogen and oxygen, then burn it in a car, than it would be to just use the electricity to power the car in the first place. Is there a single example of somebody trying these plans out? Edit: After looking at the 'plans' and perusing the site some more I'm willing to say that it won't work. There's no math or research to support it. No photos of completed equipment. And the site is authored by a loon: "Water in its primal form is a mirror to human consciousness and can be whatever the dreamer perceives." Don't get me started. ![]()

Geez, you probably don't even believe in the healing power of crystals. Or the ability of a pyramid to sharpen a dull razor. Or...
