If they could do a brushed aluminum i would be all over it. one that completely replaced the old one, cause the little clips broke off of mine, so now its sitting in my garage.

I would like them too. Does any member have the interest AND the capability to produce them at a reasonable cost.
Just a new aftermarket product idea. |

I may be interested, but the price is always the concern. Brushed AL would be good.

I've got a prototype my machinist has worked up that we still need to do a little fine tuning on. I should have them installed by the Reading meet. I should have a cost by then and I'll post to see if anyone is interested.

Yeah, it has been interesting so far. My machinist has been able to set up a break to do the primary bends. He still has to do some welding on the ends (where it flares up into the trim). My question to everyone is "what would you like the finish to be?" I'm thinking about slots that would run lengthwise with the SVX logo in the center of the sill, or no slots with the SVX logo in the center. This is the only part that my machinist isn't set up to do right now (slots are easy, it's the logo he can't do right now), but he is willing to get the equipment if there is enough demand (I know "demand is directly related to cost"

Here's how you do it: You make a REAL alumium overlay that sticks on top of the existing sill. It's cheaper to do this way, and it still looks great. Export (canadian and european) neons did this (1st gen), and it looked fantastic. In reality, all it iwas is a piece of brushed AL with some sandblasted logo on it, that sticks to the regular sill.

Rob,
The reason I went the full replacement route is that the stock piece is really, really cheap in the attachment area. The plastic lugs that lock into the plastic holders in the sill have a way of snapping off over time. My driver's side sill came off entirely after a rain/freeze spell when the sill stuck to the bottom of the door. I can definitely see how your approach is a viable option, I'm just not sure how well it would hold up over time. -Bill

An overlay MIGHT be a less expensive option.
When my sill clips broke, I drilled a hole through the sill at the clip location. I inserted plastic upholstery clips, available at the local auto store, to secure the sill to the body. A rounded top of the new clip is visible. An overlay would cover this inexpensive fix. If the Maxima anniversary sills are inspected, one would notice the aluminum piece is overlayed on interior color matched plastic. If an overlay was used, we could use our current color-matched plastic sills as the foundation. The SVX and line could be etched or tooled on a thin piece of brushed aluminum. Adhesive could be applied to secure the aluminum piece to clips or to the plastic sill. This would minimize the need for folds or welding. The edges could be rolled under, if that look is desired. Just some thoughts to minimize labor and costs.... daluvabull Last edited by daluvabull; 03-16-2004 at 08:51 AM. |
