ATF Temperature Sensor Effects
Eddy,
I was looking through the SVX service manual, one of my favorite passtimes, and do you know that it says the ATF temperature sensor has input to: Hydraulic oil temperature control, Low oil temperature control, Line pressure control, Starting control, Shift pattern select and AWD transfer clutch control? 1992, section 3-2, page 77 The only thing I can find in the manual is that ATF temperature will prevent 4th speed engagement up to 50F and I know the lock-up won't happen until around 140F from my tranny temperature gauge and that is it. I haven't seen anything else in the "book" on these other "control" items. Does the ATF sensor really effect line pressure and AWD transfer clutch control? If you know I would like to know. Does the line pressure go up or down when the temp goes up? Does the transfer pressure go up or down when the temp goes up? I checked with Subaru and the "control valve" has been changed for the 92 and also the temperature sensor and also the transfer valve. Can the "control valve" be taken apart and the solenoids removed? Thanks man. You are the best! |

Hmmmm...
Well, I can only assume that the manual is saying that the temp sensor feeds info to the TCU, and then the TCU determines line pressure and such using the various solenoids in the trans. Sounds reasonable to me, but ask me if I've ever had the time and/or inclination to reverse engineer a tranny and I'd have to answer no.
![]() I'm also going to assume that by control valve you mean valve body. And yes, they can be taken apart, I don't recommend it unless you are really, *really* patient and can devote a *lot* of time without interuptions to doing it. There's lots of little parts and pieces in it that you don't want to put in the wrong place. ![]()
