At 100K+ miles I guess it is overdue, huh?
Having the SVX into the local radiator shop for a quick R-12 discharge/recharge (the 1st ever service on the a/c heating system!) after 11 summers of mild Oregon weather (it took 1/2 lb. FREON), the owner brought to my attention that the hoses "appeared to be the OEM" ones (they are) and SQUEEZE, CRUNCH ![]() I ran the search on this board and didn't really find a lot under "hoses". Anybody have a diagram of which hoses are which? I know about the upper & lower radiator hoses, but what about the heater hoses? Which is which? I have a "flushing tee" to place inline on the heater core inlet hose: which one is that? I also hear about the existance of a "crossover" hose in the system... Anyone out there who has done this job (and I KNOW you're out there!) please chip in with your advice. I'm also wondering if there are viable alternatives to "GENUINE Subaru Part$" in the aftermarket vis-a-vis these hoses. Thanks in advance for your consideration! ![]()

Re: total hose replacement
Quote:
The hoses are: 45167PA000 Radiator Hose Inlet $9.60 45167PA020 Radiator Hose Outlet $9.60 72015PA000 Heater Hose Inlet $11.22 72015PA010 Heater Hose Outlet $11.22 Clamps if you so choose... 091748004 Radiator Hose Clamp (4 needed) $2.50ea. 909170033 Heater Hose Clamp (4 needed) $2.98ea. If you haven't changed them yet, you should replace the two tiny ATF cooler hoses under the brake master cylinder. 45521PA051 Atf Hose (2 needed) $16.52ea. Item 7 on the diagram: http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=450-B They are quite expensive, but regular atf hose tends to kink because of the sharp turn. Doug

Thanks, Doug! I'd almost given up on getting any response.
So, there is no such animal as an SVX "by-pass" or "crossover" hose? One of the other internet parts sources lists a hose that is described as running from a "pipe to the thermostat"... I couldn't find it on the diagram. It would seem to me that replacing all but one hose in the cooling system with new would leave the last one very susceptible to failure, especially since they are over a decade old... I just didn't want to tear the hoses off and come up one short. Thanks again!

Not that it matters (to anyone?) but I went with 4 NAPA molded hoses for the upper & lower (still have to trim them!) + 2 heater hoses, all under $50 total.
Installation was straightforward, except it can be hard to access the lower radiator hose & clamp without removing the belly pan. Mine has had the threads stripped on the attaching bolts by too many dealership oil changes ("We just use the ol' air wrench to spin 'em off, Eyuck!"). Added a Prestone flushing "T" on the passenger side. I was actually impressed at the effectiveness of this method in backflushing the coolant: only took a couple minutes for the water/coolant mixture to run clear and cold. As the original 100K+ hoses actually look & feel pretty good they went into a bag marked "In case of emergency" I keep in the trunk on long trips. One of which is planned for later this month (and part of August)... Cheers!
