HID ballast/bulbs questions

So are all the ballasts the same?

They are 9003/9004/9007... bulbs but
can they be used under the same ballast?

But they're bi-xenon and single...same ballast?

Just wonder if anyone's sure of this. thanks.

I know that from LavaLux the 9006 with 4300K, 5000K, 6000K and 8000K all use the same ballast.
And I know that from LavaLux a 9005, 5000K uses the same ballast as a 9006.
Does that answer your question?

Thanks, OT.
Kind of yes,....kind of not yet...

So are all the ballasts from different manufacturers interchangeable?

OT, so can you use your SVX's ballasts put them on your dad's legacy?
The legacy has the single bulb producing low/hi beam from one bulb. I mean if your SVX is single xenon bulb(for low beam only) and your dad's legacy has bixenon bulb(for low/hi beam xenon).....are these two ballast interchangeable from both cars? or are they the same?

Sorry, I hope I'm not getting myself confused. : )

I would like to announce that, after a small bit of modification at the hands of svxfiles this morning, I am now the owner of the first SVX on the network with 5000K HID headlights....

AND matching 5000K HID factory foglights!

The difference is not to be believed in mere words. The lights are 3 times brighter than stock and increase the peripheral lighting out to the sides by about 75%. They also completely fill in the slightly underlit portion between the edge of the hood and the road itself.

From a distance it looks like separate low and high beams. If I am running just the HID projector lights and get flashed by another driver, I'll just flip on the fogs instead of the high beams.

The only mod necessary is to enlarge the opening in the gray plastic foglight "disc" that seals the lamp wires to the housing to 1" to accept the new grommets. Everything else is plug and play as before. About an hour's worth of install time.

Photos coming soon

On a somewhat related topic:

The new HID projector bulbs definitely put out less heat than the stock halogen bulbs. There was a heavy frost at svxfiles house this morning when I woke up. I started the car and let it run with the HIDS and the PIAA high beams on.

Five minutes later, the area in front of the high beams was completely defrosted and clear; The lens area in front of the projector HIDs was still frosted over.

We ended up not installing them on my Dads Outback, yet.

Since I have not yet installed a set in my Dads Outback, I cannot yet say.

These next photos of the beam pattern really do not do the HID lighting justice. It is much brighter than it appears

The first photo is just the low beam projectors with the 5000K HID bulbs illuminating the road.

The photo below is the projector low beams with the 5000K HID fog lights turned on as well.

The HID fog lights illuminate a lot more of the area directly in front of the car and fill in any dark spots. About about double the light
out to the sides as stock.

When looking from the front, The fog lights appear to be as bright as the high beams. I am sure i will be flashed by oncoming drivers, just because they see 4 bright lights.

I am still trying to find a way to rewire and use just use the fog lights alone when driving in snow, to decrease the possibility of unwanted glare.

This may be sv-xcessive illumination, even by my standards. I may just drive downtown at night to see if I can get the automatic street lights to turn off, fooling them into thinking the sun has come up!

All HID photos in my locker HERE

Sorry that I didn't take install photos.

The HID bulbs fit into the housing exactly the same as the stock fog light bulbs do, with the same clearance. They lock in using the same spring clip as well.

Take out the gray plastic disk that has the 2 wires going through the rubber grommet in the center. Pull the wires and grommet out of the hole.

The HID bulb connectors have 3 or 4 wires going through a larger rubber grommet, so you have to drill out the hole in the plastic disc to 1" in order to snap in the new grommet. Once installed, it looks completely stock. No splicing of wires and completely reversible.
