A good used SVX trans will run you around $750-$1,000. A rebuilt or new SVX trans will be $2,500+.

Are you going to do the work yourself or have a shop do it for you?

If you can do it yourself, then I'd recommend buying a used 4.11/4.44 trans from a '93-'98 Impreza or Legacy and swapping that and the rear diff into your car. These parts in total will run you about $400-$500 as junk yards have these Subaru models in abundance. The shorter gearing will raise your revs in each gear, thereby multiplying the torque transmitted to the wheels and making your car even faster. The gearing will also reduce the strain placed on the trans as the gears will be doing more work.

The swap is reasonably straight-forward and a direct plug-n-play for your SVX TCU.

Do a search under 4.11 or 4.44 for more info. Svxfiles, myself, boxer6, SVX-FF all have modifed gearing in our cars and SVX-FF has a write-up in his locker.

Just an option to consider...

Are you saying to buy the TRANS from the impreza as well as the rear diff? A direct no mod plug in>?> amazing!

Can we just order a rebuilt one from a trans shop for less $$ than an svx unit?

Chike is saying buy an Imprezza or Legacy automatic (same box), and a Legacy rear differential (has to be swapped as the gears are a different ratio) - make sure the two match in gear ratios - should be 4.11.

In my experience, getting a good used box is much cheaper. I paid $1600 for rebuilding a unit a couple of years ago (I pulled and replaced the box myself - this was just for the rebuild). About a month or so ago I paid $850 for a used 1998 transaxle and rear differential that had only 29K miles on it and had whatever internal system improvements Subaru had made on the 4EAT between 92 and 98.

Last, I don't see a rebuilt price being significantly different between the SVX and Legacy/Imprezza. The cheap part comes because you get a used one from a wrecking yard and there are many more wrecked Imprezza/Legacys than SVXs.

Comprendo, are there diferent ratios between Legacy boxes that need calculating for the new rear gears? and do you need to change ring/pinion to match the box or just find a set that'll end up at 4:11?

type 4.11 into the search function and find more than you might want to know.

All I can speak to with authority is what I have - a 98 Imprezza auto transaxle and a 97 Legacy rear differential (from a manual shift Legacy). The rear diff ratio must match whatever transaxle ratio is picked. 4.44 is also an option depending on price & local availability. A grinder (for the rear diff) a good assortment of hand tools, a couple of jackstands and a day or two and the swap can be done in a home garage - at least that's where I did mine.

Doh! I forgot to mention Lee in the members with upgraded gears...

What I'll add is this:

You have three different gearings at your disposal to choose from -

3.90 gears from turbo Legacys with a 4EAT

4.11 gears from NA Legacy sedans and wagons, and Impreza sedans as well as the Impreza Outback Sport Wagon.

4.44 gears from the Legacy Outback wagon

The Impreza rear diffs are very small and aren't large enough to swap in the limited slip from your SVX rear diff. Therefore, if you get a 4.11 Impreza trans, you'll need a 4.11 rear diff from a Legacy sedan or wagon.

3.55 in the USDM awd SVX's, 3.70 in the USDM fwd SVX's.

All SVXs that were sold in Europe, Japan and Australia have 3.70 gears.
