My baby's getting a new coat.
After 15 years it's time for a new coat of paint. Redid all the suspension and bushings last fall. Can hardly wait 'till she's ready!

Keeping the stock colour or going for something new? No rust hiding anywhere?

Have had the car "Rust Checked" every year since new. One tiny patch of surface rust close to a wheel well. Only one bolt broke during disassembly, which isn't bad for a '92.
Going with a colour called "Indigo" from the current Jag line up. It has a bright blue metal flake when the light hits it, but can also look almost black. |

Hmmm...great job on disassembly. hopefully it doesnt come out wavy..looks like they used the d.a. on it (I prefer to block the primer by hand) Looks like someone dug out the chips in the hood a bit carelessly. after paint a few small halos will likely appear on the pasenger side front corner of the hood, and one just left of the emblem
Then again, Im a picky, picky little guy. Im sure the car will come out well beyond expectations Just curious, are you having them spray the doorjambs too?

I'd like to do much of the prep work on my own car when I have it painted...some time... I always assumed I'd remove all the glass so they could paint underneath the door and window seals. Is the glass left in simply to keep the dust out? If that's the case, why not just seal it off with paper?

It's easier to leave the glass in and mask it with paper/tape, but the results won't be as good. Having the clearcoat (assuming you're doing base/clear) end at the weatherstripping rather than running under it gives the clearcoat greater opportunity to peel at that seam. Peeling issues aside, it will never look quite as good left in and masked as it would if the glass was removed. It's just a matter of how much money/labor you want to expend, though.
On the other hand, if you're not trained at removing glass, weatherstripping, trim, etc., it's quite easy to damage, especially the nylon fasteners and clips that get brittle over time. That might be an argument just to leave it in place and mask it. Last edited by davew833; 02-23-2007 at 01:20 PM. |

The plastic strip along the top of the door where the windows roll down has been removed along with the handles, mirrors and interior door panels. The seals are also going to be removed. (As long as they won't destroy them in the process. They total over 2000.00 to replace which is just plain nuts.)

Yeah, theres honesly no need at all to remove the glass. Ever. Lift tape the rubber moldings and the paint will dust its way underneath, and melt into what's there. Only ****ty tape up's will peel.
i's good to see the amount of disassembly they did. You do realize...Way oversized pictures of the fresh paint glimmering in direct sunlight WILL be mandatory, right?

Well April 1st is getting close. Tentative deadline for getting my car back. Things are progressing well. The two techs who are working on the car are getting excited. One pointed out a small run on the bottom of the driver's door from a previous paint job (after the door was keyed one time). He said "I found something that doesn't look factory." then pointed it out. "That won't be there when we're finished" He said with a big grim. They know the colour as they did a Jag not to long ago, and were waxing on about how great they picture the finished job. Ask me if I'm getting excited.
