Best in show?
Just an idea, but what about some sort of best in show contest. There can be like first, second, third place for say nicest looking, mechanical modifications, etc. If we somehow got together a panel of 3 non-partial judges that could rate all the cars, it would be cool. I wasn't thinking any sort of specific prizes or anything, but a ribbon or something would be cool for each place, maybe a certificate, or something of that nature. Just an idea...

Yeah, I had toyed with that idea a while back, but as a picture / timeslip entry contest type deal using poles, so other members could vote. It didnt catch on too well...I recieved one timeslip and pictures from like... one person. Though Im sure an in person Reading thing would work a heck of alot better. Ill take dibs on judge / organizer guy
I also had an idea for a fund raising photoshoot I was toying around with for like..sunday morning, but Id need a better camera first. Mabey we could colaberate something

It sounds interesting. We need some guidelines though.

John hoffman needs some competition this year...Lol
We can have very simple categories...Best condition stock(This would be the car with the least wear and tear, stock. Not necicarily the most polished), cleanest, most tastefully modified(This would be things like bumpers, lips, mabey paint scheme, that sort of thing), and best overall (This would include cleanlyness, condition of parts, mechanical and other modifications, ect. OR could be an exceptionally good stock car) I think anything much more than that would be overcomplicating it. Do like a first prize and runner up for each category..Prizes could include raffle tickets, framed certificates, ribbons..mabey even some car detailing supplies Like I said, im all for helping such an award thing

Since my car is far from being eligible for any of those, I'll volunteer to help with this also.

Having been involved with Classic Car clubs and competitions for many years, I know there is plenty of room for dissent if the rules are not absolute. Use two categories only, with First Prize and Runner-up in each. Category 1 is Best Original Car, or best Stock if you Americans prefer. Category 2 is Best Modified Car. These two classifications are mutually exclusive. A car is only Original or Stock if everything on it is OEM. If you change the radio, it's Modified. Modified could be a very tasty almost original car with new wheels, or it could be a ThunderSaloon with 500hp and racing skirts. Once it's modified, it's Modified. These should be easy enough to judge. Joe

Hmm...Simple would seem to be better. I was debating with myself over if it would be fair to consider an svx with a diffrent radio or hood ornaments stock or not...but then realized: Where would you draw the line? Mabey some other categories relating to...not the svx.....for people who desrve an award even if thir car is dirty, ugly, or broken
Either way, Jay started this thread..I dont want to comandeer it from him. I say if he would like to organize a best in show thing, thatd be an awesome contribution to the meet, and I'd be glad to help out if he so chooses me to help

The older the cars get, the more importance is given to absolute originality.
At that point Eric, even minor things like a different hood ornament or radio disqualify a car from the "stock" category. Against that trend, you will find people who are using seemingly original Corvettes would have changed the front drum brakes to disk [rotor] brakes from a later model. This tends to be accepted on grounds of safety, and is regarded as "sensitively modified" Just the same, a "sensitively modified" car will not qualify in a major concours event like Pebble Beach etc. It is easier to keep the stock category absolutely "pure" If you give First Prize ribbon to a car that is 99.99% stock that has an Alcyone hood ornament, somebody with a 100% pure car that is not as well turned out is sure to ***** and whine. Happens every time. You can always split the Modified category into two, Sensitively Modified and Heavily Modified, if you want to give more ribbons out. And another category can be "Best in Show". Best in Show can be outside both categories. By definition it will be the best turned out vehicle on show. It could be 100% original or it could be modified. This one is awarded by the subjective opinion of the judges, and it needs to stand clear of any quibbles about originality. It's an award purely about how good the car looks and originality is not part of the judging criteria for this one. [Because of this classification, it is fairly common that Best in Show might also win first place in Best Stock, or maybe in Best Modified. This is a judges decision] Joe

I'm glad to see that people seem interested in this. I didn't have any specific ideas, especially for qualifications between classes. I was hoping someone would pick it up and run with it, i'm certainly not the one to do it, even though i'm surely not one to qualify in any of hte categories.
We do have our purists, with OEM radio, badging, etc, and then there's the folks who modify their cars simply because the OEM isn't available or sufficient, such as exhaust, brake system, etc. A few years back, i used to go to tractor shows, with my 87 and 85 cub cadet's, there was show quality, tractor pulls, which there was stock, modified, and super-modified classes, I was remembering that the other day when i was tuning up my tractor, and thought it might be nice if they had something to recignize those at reading who had truely exceptional cars, as i saw quite a few this past year. I would refrain from bigger or elaborate prizes, even things such as raffle tickets, unless it was 1-2, ribons and/or certificates, something you can display in your home or office, would seem more appropriate to me. The ideas are great though guys, keep them coming please.

I like Joe's ideas on classifications, with the "sensitively modified" category. There are many (myself included) that would never consider their cars as modified, even though they do have departures from pure stock, such as JDM pieces, aftermarket wheels and/or an Outback transmission. When I think of "heavily modified", I'm thinking of perhaps TomSVX.
I also like the "Best in Show".
