Re: problem with heat
The thermostat is located on the front of the water pump where the lower rad hose goes into the engine. There are two 10mm bolts holding the t-stat cover on. Drain the rad first, remove the lower hose, remove the t-stat cover, remove old t-stat, install new one with new gasket, replace cover and hose, fill and bleed coolant.

Re: problem with heat
If you are getting no heat whatsoever, its much more likely theres a problem with the mix door or control system, or you are very low on coolant, OR your water-pump is toast.
A stuck open thermostat will still allow the engine to get warm enough for heat. |

Re: problem with heat
If the temp. gauge reads normal when driving the car, then look at the air mix door as Socal mentioned.

Re: problem with heat
Don't have any pictures but here is the parts diagram from Subaruparts.com.
The mix motor is #2 on the bottom of the heater box. The mix door rods are #7 and #8. You might try giving them a nudge while raising and lowering the temperature and see if they will start working again. Also a power test to the electrical plug to see if a signal is coming from the AC control unit. Gene
