Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

I'm wondering what's involved with replacing the front main seal? I have searched but no one
seems to say much about it which leads me to two conclusion, 1. No one has done it. or 2. It's
really easy and not worth writing about.

It looks like it's just inside the oil pump on the diagrams, should I plan oin replacing the oil pump
while I have it all apart?

Thnks, Blue

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

I change it (the front crankshat seal) out on every timing belt replacement,

(unless the owner is on a VERY strict budget.)

Part #s are here at post #8.

I'll be waiting for your response, thank you. Sorry to hear about your other leak, I have more leaks myself but was thinking of tackling this one first.

Thanks for the Part# svxfiles

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

Since the front main seal is installed on the oil pump, which is pretty easy to remove, I just pull the pump off to replace the seal. That way I don't have to worry about damaging anything when I remove the old seal.

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

What are the issues in removing the crank sprocket? Does the oil pan need to be removed to access the oil seal & oil O ring?

What are the safe methods to remove the sprocket?

Is it safe?
Yes, its very safe...
First if your crankshaft sprocket has issues, its better just to remove it.
It should just pull off. Or gently be pried off.
No. The oil pan only needs to be removed to replace the oil pan gasket, fix a leak, etc..
The oil seal/front main seal and O-ring can be replaced after you remove the oil pump.
Make sure that you tighten the screws on the back of the oil pump.

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

Svxfile.

If I understand your post, I can change the oil pump seal and oil pump O ring without removing the oil pan, just checking to verify. I have not been any deeper than changing the timing belt. I am leaking oil big time. I am starting with the valve covers, then the cam seals, then the crank seal and oil pump seal and O ring. Am I on the right path?

Yes.
You might want to replace the cam seals, and cam caps at the same time.

Re: Front Main Seal, Anyone Tackle?

If the sprocket is stuck does anyone know what size tap it takes to thread it and pull it off?

Thanks,
Keith

From what I have read the holes for bolts in the crank sprocket need to be tapped, the holes are not threaded.

Send me your email in a PM and I'll send you a PDF document that is 79 pages on procedures for the engine, another member here sent it to me, it's very good. This document contains the info you are asking about.

Dave

I measure the holes at 0.256".
A 5/16 X 18 tap fits best.
I tapped out both holes also trying a 7mm X 75.
Here is a handy link.
