Re: Overheating
when you start the car the heater core is just about the only thing the coolant goes through till you get enough temperature to make the thermostat start to gradually open. On an svx any air in a heater core would be gone in seconds.

There are two paths that the coolant can use till the thermostat opens. The heater runs off the right hand side of the water outlet manifold, through the heater back to the pump inlet. There is a by-pass pipe also, that runs off the left hand side of the water outlet manifold, back to the pump inlet. The water will flow through the path of less resistance. That is the By-pass. Harvey.

Dang Harvey, I was thinking that other pump thingie was a return for the heater I should have checked to make sure. Like my old dad used to say... "That's what you get for doing your own thinking" I should get your Christmas DVD movie on the road next Tuesday. So sorry about that Take care, Keith |

Re: Overheating
well think about the statement logically, if the heat is not working... obviously the car is at running temperature. If the car reaches operating temp and the heat is not working and the temp starts to rise above operating temp, then my guess would be a seized water pump. If the water pump is seized, you will also hear smell the timing belt burn as is slides over the frozen pulley.

Re: Overheating
My water pump seized in my 90 legacy and if I had had a blanket I could have sent up smoke signals

Re: Overheating
Well, it might be best to pull the timing covers off and look at the water pump while you turn the engine over to see if the pump is locked. If not, start the car briefly and make sure the pump is turning easily and that the noise you hear is not from it

Re: Overheating
When my hexwifes 1.8 Impreza's water pump siezed, the car could idle for hours with no noise, no smoke, and no overheating....
But if you drove it one mile super overheating!!! Pegged the temp gauge, and boiled over!

Re: Overheating
Does a bad coolant temp sensor has anything to do with over heating??

Re: Overheating
If the two wire sensor does not tell the ECU to turn on the fans, or turn them on at the correct temperature, YES!

Re: Overheating
If your car overheats at idle, but returns to normal at cruising speed, then its a good clue its bad. You can also just rev the engine while sitting and watch for them to kick on and off.
