New Tranny-rebuild or swap
Okay guys and gals, I have information overload
Option 1: Swap it out. Legacy tranny with 4.44 gears costs $1700 and $100 shipping (cheaper than taking the ferry to get it). The tranny shop says it'll take 15+ hours to do the work at $85 an hour, so all in, close to $3200, give or take $100... Option 2: Rebuild the tranny I've got. Shop #1- This is the shop Subaru sends all its trannies to. Good reputation. 3-4 day turn around. Free towing Custom build with a 2 year/40K warranty. $1504 for labor plus cost of parts. OR Reman for approx. $2000, with 1 yr/20k warranty. Shop#2- At the least, $1428 labour plus cost of parts Seems crazy that a used tranny will cost so much, but I live in Canada, and 3 auto salvages all quote in this price range. (The only SVX tranny is $3600+ labour to install.) I know the front diff is toast, the question is how much would parts cost for the custom job...once they take it apart, they'll call with an estimate and I can choose which way to go with Shop#1, re & re or custom. With Shop#2, I'm waiting on their phone call to give me more info. Even though its more than I wanted to spend, I'm leaning toward Shop#1 and the custom work. They've worked on SVXs in the past, and say she'll be better than when she was new when they're done... I wish I lived near a Tom, (beam me up Scotty ) as it sounds like I could get the job done faster, better, and for less, but that ain't goin'a happen. (I'm hoping she can go to have the dents fixed while I wait to get her in. Autobody shop is just down the street from tranny shop.)

Are you near the border at all? It might be worth your while to make a trip across and get a tranny.

Thought of that. I'm looking into how much customs and duties and taxes would be. And rental of a car to go, as the Sprint won't be making the trip. Anyone across the border from Vancouver BC know of a tranny?? With front and rear diffs...maybe you could ship it as a "gift" (no taxes, etc when shipped that way?)
( Earl, do all your cars really need their transmissions? Which one do you drive the least...)

Even though I'm sure you're probably a looooooooooong way from YT, it would be much cheaper to get it installed, etc.

Quote:
Your other car is a Sprint? A Sprint could carry a 4EAT. It weighs a couple hundred pounds, think solidly built person. If you're doing the trip solo I don't think there would be a problem.

This summer I was quoted 7.5 hours for the r&r of the trans and 1.5 to swap the rear diff out. (going 4.44 route) That's $650 labor plus parts (maybe another 500). Or have them just put in a Leg. trans for $450 on labor. Sounds like you are getting robbed up there.

Shop#1 said 16.8 hours.- 4.7 hrs for taking it out and putting it back in, and 12.1 hrs for rebuild.
Shop#2 said about 11 or 12 hours for removal of old and install of new. When I mentioned he'd have to put the 4.44 gears into the SVX diff housing, he said that added another 4 or 5 hrs. Oh, and I figure the Sprint could do it, but I really don't like driving in a tin can on a highway at 60-80 with semi's, big a** SUV's, and trucks with tires that are bigger than the car I'm in. Just not my thing...
