sunroof adds maybe 15lbs. Shipping weight of one was all of 11lbs.

And the CD player was standard, that is three pounds, and two tweeter speakers, I'm guessing 2 ounces.

I had my stock L seats out once and they weighed around 36lbs each if I recall (driver's and passenger's seats were identical in weight).

Per SVXfiles' earlier post, the LS-L and LSi driver's seat weigh 68lbs and the passenger's seat weighs 45lbs. It's also possible that leather rear seats weigh slightly more than the cloth rear seats in an L model. Also, didn't some LS-L and LSi seats have heaters built into them? And didn't most LS-L and LSi passenger's seats come with an undertray (relatively light piece, but added weight nonetheless).

A roof built for a sunroof will add a lot more than just 11lbs. There are extra structural reinforcements built around the opening that a solid roof will not have. Most sunroofs add around 30-40lbs when you compare to a solid piece roof...

This is probably the best figure to use when determining how much some of these extra luxury items weigh. Both the '94 L and LS models were fwd and came with cloth seats, but per cars101.com the LS came with a sunroof, while the L model didn't. This is a difference of 55lbs!

Blah, blah, blah blah blah. Did you see the structure in our conviently removed sunroof showing all that structure. Shipping weight was 11lbs with motor and enough insulation and a box to keep it safe to FL (so actual weight was maybe 8lbs. The structure has 2 extra braces coming across that might weigh about 3lbs a piece. Then there is the drains to make up the last pound. You need to remember the car was designed with the roof from day one.

I hear what you're saying Ben, but sometimes extra bracing is added into the front and rear bulkheads to support the roof should a roll-over occur.

I just posted what the nada program on my computer said.
The only way for me to verify it would be to take a digital picture and post it.
In other words, I was not kidding, or fabricating. I actually think it is wrong.

You know, one member also posted a little while back that kbb claimed the '96 SVX made 238hp. I guess things get a little 'fuzzy' in the '96 model year.

You know, if you pull the doors off and replace them with shrink wrap you save almost 100 pounds a door right Chike?
Just messin with ya a little. From what I heard once, every 100 pounds removed takes about 1/10th of a second off your quarter mile time. Just curious if this is somewhat accurate.

Not really. Especially when you consider the extremes. 100 pounds is not much to a Hummer but 100 pounds is plenty for a Justy.

Pointless weight loss

I know it is considered a Good Thing to lose weight from a car if you are going racing. If a car is heavy, it takes a lot of energy, i.e. power and torque, to shift all that mass up to higher velocities.

Likewise, when this Great Mass is up to speed, then it becomes a problem to get it around corners, and to lose speed, requiring lots of energy again in the form of heat at the brakes to lose all the momentum.

Without wanting to be a killjoy, it seems to me to be missing the point of the design brief of the SVX to be trying to shave pounds and ounces off the car in the hope of making it a better quarter mile machine.

If you want it to go better, give it loads of extra power, and give it massive brakes. Forget throwing away the cigar lighter, we are not the Blues Brothers!!

In support of my thesis, the following statistics describe the Brabus Mercedes E class EV12.

Weight 2020 kilos [4453lbs]
Engine 6.3L V12 twin turbo
Power 640 bhp @ 5100
Torque 1026 Nm @ 1750
0-100kms 4.5 sec
0-200kms 11.7 sec
0-300kms 30.6 sec
Top speed 350km/h[217mph]

That's the way I want my SVX to go and stop. Just supply a more powerful engine, more powerful brakes, keep the nice heavy electrics and leather seats, and Presto!, a subsonic Gentleman's Club. On wheels!!

Way to go...

Joe
