Rear diff side bearing preload?

How do you guys adjust the rear diff carrier side bearing preload? I know the shims are swapped, but how much preload?

The manual gives a formula which uses a lot of different figures stamped in the OEM parts, but I'm installing a Quaife carrier with no exact measures.

The shims which were in the OEM assembly give practically a zero preload.I checked with out the crown wheel and no shaft seals. -Zero turning resistance.

The more recent R160s have the same adjustment as the front bearings in the 4EAT - turning the bearing retainers. The manual calls for half a tooth preload - with 18 teeth this is 1/36th of a turn.... 1mm thread pitch results in approximately 0.03mm preload.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Tapani
