Forget the Impreza rear diff unless that Impreza came with a 2.5 engine.
How to is in my signature. Forget the Impreza TQ, it will overheat. Forget the Imp flexplate. ( however Subaru Parts .com lists the Imp# as one that will work) Like Ben says have your TQ professionally cleaned. If you can buy SVX TQs for $100.00 I want three to start. Tom

What from a company that spray paints the outside nice and shiney and slaps on a useless warranty? Me want to know where you're getting one for at that price!

Yep,
You can use the Impreza Tranny, with no mods....to use the Impreza Torque Convertor, you need a Impreza Flexplate. I too say if you want to use the SVX Torque Convertor, have it rebuilt...cost me $175 the last time I had one done. (or just use the Impreza one) On the rear diff...be careful, as many Impreza have a "smaller" rear diff....make sure it has the 5-bolt side plates on it, or you can't swap the gears into the SVX LSD unit....Use SVXfiles write up to swap the ring and pinions. And the reason you can't "just use" the Impreza rear diff as a direct bolt in, is because the SVX rear LSD uses unique axles, that no other Subaru rear diff uses (that I know of) If the Impreza rear diff doesn't have the 5-bolt side plates, then just get a Legacy rear diff with the same ratio as the Impreza one... Hope this has been helpful

It has been my experience that an Impreza torque converter will cause the trans to overheat.
I will never again install an Impreza TQ behind a 3.3. Tom

The Impreza 2.2 probably has the right rear diff, but just check to be sure it has 5-bolt side flanges... I'm pretty sure only the EJ18 Impreza's had the smaller diff... But it's really easy to see the difference in the side plates.

Now the question is the tq converter 2.2 converter with flex plate - will it overheat like svxfiles said or will I be fine like huck said? I really dont have the $$ to get my SVX tq converter cleaned professionally Thank you all for your help |

If the diff exploded you can reuse it by just changing the trans oil over and over again. I used to change out 6 quarts of trans fluid every 6000 mile engine(synthetic) oil change. Oil is cheap! BTW, getting the TQ cleaned is cheaper than having to re-do the job.

The diff I have is fine I thought I just needed to change it because of the Impreza tranny I do all my own work by myself - I just never tried to rebuild a tranny.... I just need to know if the Impreza 2.2 tq converter will work fine? Thank you all for your help |

I'm not going against SVXfiles on the Imprza TC, but I think with the lower final drive, and a good tranny cooler you'd be OK....but having the SVX TC rebuilt would be the ideal thing to do, but I understand about working on a budget.

OK, so I for now I can use the Impreza 2.2 tq converter w/ the flex plate because of budget which should be ok w/ a trans cooler and proper maintenance
Awesome!!! The 3.3 SVX tq converter is better to use but needs a professional rebuild... (Ill ofcourse keep the OE tranny till I have the $$ to rebuild because I want to keep all matching #'s; so the SVX tq converter isnt going anywhere either so when I have the $$ Ill fix it correctly) I do all my own work so I should be fine without having to spend so much $$ now! (gotta love the holidays ) Thank you all for your understanding and knowlage |
