Late 04 or 05 would be best, actually, for reasons I cannot recall at the moment. The ECUTune helps but you don't have to spring for it right away. 1986nate is working on making kits for m/t swaps.

02 and 03 WRX transmissions sheer 2nd and 3rd gears if WRX owners either beat on them, didn't know how to drive, or did some significant mods for more power.
