Getting glass shards out
Bought two headlights locally that are almost Brand New. Came off a 92 Tealy that owner had purchased two new headlights a year ago. Car was sold but he kept the new lights and put back the old lights. Anyway he decided to sell the lights, cause hes done with svxs. Anyway, one of the lights has broken metal shards and metal dust from broken bulb on the inside of the lens. What is the easiest and best way to clean it out. I was thinking of using an air hose down at the local garage. Outside of both lenses are crystal clear. Paid $50 for both.

Re: Getting glass shards out
The absolute best way would be to cook the lights in an oven to soften the glue, then take the lenses off and gently blow the bits out, being careful not to touch/smudge the inside of the lense or the chrome bits, then re-heat it to soften the glue and stick it back together.
The easiest way is to remove all the bulbs from the light, hold it lense up, and shake it. Maybe put a vaccuum to the low beam hole to help the bits out. And DON'T TOUCH the glass of a bulb going in, it's the oils from your skin that cause the glass to heat up in one spot, get very thermally stressed, and explode into tiny bits.

Re: Getting glass shards out
I would agree with the above suggestion.

Re: Getting glass shards out
a nice simple wash would do the trick fine too. (if your not into baking brand new headlights) get some soap and water in there and slosh it around. rinse it like CRAZY. Do a little filtered water for the final rinse, and let it sit in a warm dry area (window sill?) for a few days. Worked like a charm for me.

Re: Getting glass shards out
I am certain that the glass particles in the lenses are caused by the disintegration of the edges of the projector lens from friction and vibration inside the housing where they are mounted. The area where this glass dust collects is in front of the projector and onto the headlight itself. It just clings to the inside of the plastic lens as well.
Even after cleaning, it may come back in the future It looks like ice crystals in this close up photo. What would svxcess do? I would take the current headlight assemblies apart (using the oven method), mark the position of the projector lenses (so they can be put back in correctly) and take them out of the housing. vacuum and clean all of the debris thoroughly from the housing and then re-bed the lenses, using a thin bead of clear RTV silicone around the edges, to seal and cushion the lenses from vibration, eliminating this problem in the future. More photos of a disassembled headlight in mohrds locker HERE .

Re: Getting glass shards out
I think I'll try the soap and water first. Thanks for the tip
